Anthropology Postgraduate Studies

Master of Arts (MA) in Anthropology and Sociology by Research (100%)

Candidates enrolled in the MA in anthropology by research normally complete a thesis of 40,000 - 60,000 words in length. All students will be allocated a supervisor who has particular knowledge and expertise in the topic area. Students may be asked to audit units where this appears desirable. Attendance at School research seminars is required.

Entry Requirements and Length of Candidature

Candidates with a BA Honours degree with an HI or H2A result in the relevant discipline or a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Research) in anthropology and sociology (or equivalent) with an HI or H2A result are eligible for admission. This research degree may be completed in no more than two years full time study or four years part time study.

Master of Arts (MA) in Anthropology and Sociology by Coursework and Research (66%)

The MA in anthropology may also be completed by coursework and research. Students enrolled in this program must take two coursework units and complete a research thesis of 25,000-35,000 words in length. This course provides students who already have an honours degree in anthropology, sociology or other cognate disciplines with the opportunity to expand, update and deepen their knowledge and understanding. Other students may gain entry to this masters course by first completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Research). Students may choose such a program for various reasons, including the desire to pursue their own intellectual interests, to gain more specialised knowledge and detailed understanding of a particular area, to acquire technical and applied skills and knowledge, or to prepare themselves for a PhD and a career in research and teaching. The course may be taken over one and a half years full-time or three years part-time.

Entry Requirements and Length of Candidature

Applicants should have an Honours degree with a grade of H1 or H2A in a relevant discipline (or equivalent qualification) or Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Research) in anthropology or sociology with an overall grade of H2A or above as well as a distinction or above in the research component.
