Research
My PhD (2002) was conducted in the Centre for Women’s Studies and Gender Research at Monash University. It explored the emphasis of native title law on traditional forms of Aboriginal emplacement and the denigration of non or post-traditional forms of emplacement. Issues of gender and race were also central. Since completing my PhD, I have developed my research interests in Indigeneity, colonialism, postcolonialism and gender. Recently, I have centred my investigation of these themes in the context of Papua New Guinea (PNG). In particular, I am interested in cross-cultural interaction and have explored this through a focus on international adoption, producing several articles about the adopted Papua New Guinean children of Dr D.C. Gajdusek. Together with Dr Martha Macintyre at Melbourne University I am currently investigating gender and education issues in PNG.
