I am Acting Director of the Monash Asia Institute and a Lecturer in Anthropology in the School of Political and Social Inquiry.
My Teaching
In 2011, I am coordinating:
ATS1255 - Culture, Power and Globalisation
ATS2378 / ATS3378 - Development and the Third World
ATS4924 - Political and Social Inquiry Honours Seminar (Anthropology component)
I have also designed and taught Anthropologies of Popular Culture, Anthropological Theory and Cultural Performance in Indonesia, and have taught Ethnographic Methods.
My Research
Studying Anthropology and Comparative Sociology enabled me to bridge my early career direction as an industrial technician with my deep and enduring interests in musical subcultures and Southeast Asia. I now work as a social-cultural anthropologist researching a diverse range of musics, intellectual forums and development issues in Indonesia and the wider world. Currently I am researching street music and regional identity. I am also working with Monash Sustainability Institute on collaborative research initiatives that bring together Australian and Indonesian social and biophysical scientists.
My doctoral dissertation (La Trobe Univ.) explored music and social exchange in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta during the tumultuous early post-Soeharto years. I sought to nuance the ideas of French social theorist Pierre Bourdieu, and described and analysed campursari (‘mixed essences’), jalanan (street) and other musics as performed and discussed in roadside jam sessions, neighbourhood rituals, entertainment venues and state institutions.
