ATS2344 / 3344 Archaeological Fieldwork in Tuscany is offered as part of the winter semester 2011. The course will be taught in Prato from 1 - 20 July 2012.
Please note that students and staff will meet in Rome on Sunday 1 July and depart from Rome on Friday 20 July. Please note that accommodation has been arranged for the last night (Friday 20 July) in Rome however students will have finished all class requirements on the Friday afternoon.
We will spend 4 nights in Rome as a precursor program to the course that includes visits to museums and Etruscan sites (Rome, Florence and other relevant sites) as part of the course program. Students will study the archaeology of Archaic Rome and of the Etruscans. Students will learn the basic methodology of archaeological excavations and will be introduced to the basic theories of restoration techniques relevant to the archaeological excavations. The fieldwork activities will mainly take place at the excavation site of Pietramarina, an Etruscan fortress of the 5th century BCE redeveloped under the Roman rule around the 3rd- 2nd century BCE.

For Current Monash Students
- You must register your interest with the Unit Leader for the Program (andrea.dicastro@monash.edu).
- You must seek Course Advice from your home faculty and ensure that you have space in your course to undertake an overseas study program.
- Once you are eligible to enrol as per above, complete the Monash Abroad application The form also indicates that you need to attach the following:
a) Pay tour deposit and record receipt of your payment
b) a copy of your passport information page
c) a copy of your travel insurance
d) a copy of the front page of your bank statement (to show your account details that your grant and/or loan will be paid into)
e) Optional - your completed OS Help loan application
4. 3) Hand in your completed application to the Arts Prato Coordinator to be signed off and enrolled. You will receive an email confirmation of this step and your application will be forwarded to Monash Abroad for final processing for the Monash grant and, if applied for, the OS Help loan.

Fees and Funding
Fees
Prato Archaeology Land Tour cost- AUD$2,500.00
The land tour cost covers accommodation and breakfast, hotel transfers, coach and bus travel (Rome to Prato return by coach, transfers to Pietramania whilst in Prato), entrance fee to Vatican Museum, Monash University Prato Centre fees and administration costs.
Please note: this is the land tour only costs and does not include the International airfares return to Rome. These are arranged independently and are in the vicinity of $1800 - $2200. Along with the international flights, it also does not cover travel insurance, lunch or evening meals, personal spending money and any independent travel done outside of the program.
Pay Archaeology deposit - $500
Due by the end of March with submission of your application. The deposit will secure your place on the tour and receipt is to be included on your application form. A full refund of the deposit will be made in the case of ineligibility to enrol in the unit.
Pay Archaeology balance- $2000
Due by the end of May. Please forward receipt details to the Prato Enrolments Coordinator.
Tuition Fees
Monash University students will be charged either full-fee or CSP according to their verified funding status. This applies to core and elective units.
Funding
Financial assistance is available to current Monash students only.
Monash Abroad Funding
Most Monash students who participate in short term international study programs receive Monash Abroad travel grants from the University. Many are also eligible for a range of other loans, scholarships and grants.

University Financial Aid
The university will loan students up to $3000.00 through Financial Aid. The loan must be paid back by the time you graduate and carries no interest for the first 12 months. Contact Health, Wellbeing and Development Student Financial Aid Service on (03) 9905 3156 for further information and to arrange an appointment to see a Student Advisor about a loan.
OS-HELP Loan
You may also wish to use OS-HELP introduced by the government, where you may be eligible for financial assistance in the form of a loan towards your Arts overseas study program. Please ensure you meet all the eligibility requirements including the conditions of the loan as outlined in the OS-HELP Brochure on this website before applying.

Centrelink Letters
The program is considered a Monash University course and therefore full time students may continue to receive payments. An enrolment verification letter can be requested from Monash Student Services Centre.
