Setting up the Email client
(These are instructions for a PC - the setup for a Mac is very similar).
Click on START then find your way to the "User Profile Manager" as shown.
(To set this up on a Mac, you'll need to locate the User Profile Manager for Netscape on the Mac and run that).

Click NEW to make a new profile.
Click NEXT on the
first screen (where there is nothing to fill in).

On the next screen, Fill in your name (eg John Smith) and email address (take care to get it EXACTLY right). Click NEXT.

On the next screen, for your profile name, just put in your name (eg John Smith). Leave the next box as it is and click NEXT.

For outgoing
SMTP
server, you should have smtp.monash.edu.au Click NEXT.

(Important note - if you are setting up a home computer, smtp.monash.edu.au should only be used when you are dialing up via the Monash modem pool. If you are using some other provider (eg Optus or Telstra) then you need to contact them to find what to put in - the Monash smtp.monash.edu.au won't work on their system).
For mail server username put your login name. Incoming mail server should say mail1.monash.edu.au If not already chosen, choose IMAP. Click NEXT.

For News (NNTP) server, it should have collabra1.monash.edu.au and port 119.

Click FINISH. Now the profile is set up.
Go into Netscape. It won't be showing the Monash page. That's ok - next time it will.
You can click STOP to stop the loading of the netscape page (click Cancel if it asks for your authcate name and password).
Now choose COMMUNICATOR and MESSENGER to go to your email. Put in your password. It will probably show two mail1.monash.edu.au entries on the left (it should only normally be showing one - that's ok - it will correct itself next time we start up Communicator). Now exit Communicator completely. The next time you start Communicator everything should be ok - ie it should go to the Monash home page and in the email there should be only one mail1.monash.edu.au
You should also delete the INBOX folder that appears under LOCAL MAIL, NOT the one under mail1.monash.edu.au though as that is the one it needs to use.
Also, if you use various
different computers, go into
Edit
Preferences
Mail & Newsgroups
Copies and folders
and set it like this -
Place a copy in folder: Sent on mail1.monash.edu.au
rather than "Sent on Local mail" which it will be by default. Do this on EACH different computer that you use and that way all the copies of things that you send will be stored in the same place on the central staff mail server rather than some of the copies being on one computer, some being on another etc. You really want them all to be in the one place and visible from every computer that you use.
That's it. If anything seems wrong, please contact the ArtsIT helpdesk on x54239 for assistance.
