Courses and Units
Welcome to the Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies (CAIS) where students have opportunities to gain knowledge and understanding of Australian Indigenous cultures, traditions and histories. Our courses have strong links with the Programme for Australian Indigenous Archaeology, a new initiative of the School of Geography and Environmental Science.
Undergraduate studies

A major or minor sequence in Australian Indigenous Studies is offered to BA students at Clayton. Students wishing to complete this major are recommended to take a first-year sequence in Australian Indigenous Studies. The teaching staff includes Prof Lynette Russell,Dr John Bradley, Dr Amanda Kearney, Dr Barry Judd and Dr Stephen Pritchard.
CAIS offers a range of Australian Indigenous studies units at first, second, third and fourth-year level. These units may be taken as part of the Bachelor of Arts or as electives.
Making a difference to Indigenous communities Any Monash student interested in working directly on projects in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities should contact the Voluntary Service to Indigenous Communities Foundation.
Honours
Students proceeding into the fourth or honours year have the opportunity of consolidating their understanding of an area (or areas) of specialisation while pursuing a research topic. This qualifies students for a degree of BA (Hons) in Australian Indigenous Studies. The fourth year is one-year full-time or two years part-time.
Graduate studies
CAIS offers a Master in Arts (by research) in Australian Indigenous studies, which entails a thesis of 30,000-40,000 words in length on an approved research topic. The Centre will appoint a suitably qualified supervisor. The degree is a maximum of two years full-time or maximum four years part-time.
CAIS also offers a fully accredited Ph.D. program - a thesis of 100,000 words on an approved research topic.The Centre will appoint a suitable qualified supervisor.
