Indigenous Access Scheme
Thinking of Going to University?
- Are you an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person?
- Have you completed Year 11 or 12 or
- Are you mature-age and wish to return to, or pursue higher education?
The Monash Indigenous Access Scheme is for you!
The Indigenous Access Scheme encourages Australian Indigenous students to study at any of the six Monash campuses. The campuses are located at Berwick, Clayton, Caulfield, Peninsula, Gippsland and Parkville. The Monash and CAIS Handbooks contain more details about entry to Monash University and its range of courses, just call and ask for a copy.
The Indigenous Access Scheme includes two pathways to tertiary study:
1. Assistance with Entry to Degree Courses Via VTAC (MIAS)
Indigenous applicants completing Year 12 who apply for entry to degree courses at Monash University via the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) may obtain a Monash Indigenous Access Scheme (MIAS) Form to provide additional information to strengthen their application for a place at Monash University. This form should be submitted by the end of November each year.
2. Indigenous Non-Award Pathway (INAP)
Indigenous students who apply through VTAC for entry in to Monash University courses but just miss out, may apply to undertake the Monash University Indigenous Non-Award Pathway for Australian Indigenous students. This is a pathway into an undergraduate course at Clayton.

CAIS - Resources and Facilities
CAIS is the main focus for the recruitment of and support services to Indigenous students. Trained staff assist students with course selection, tutorials, accommodation, study, personal support, and referral as necessary. CAIS also liaises between the Indigenous community and the University and is an important resource service for those interested in Indigenous history and culture.
CAIS provides support to Indigenous students by offering a number of facilities for student use. These facilities include computers with email and Web access (available in a Student Lab. located in our Centre at Clayton), a resource library, study, tutorial and common room. CAIS seeks to foster social interaction and create an environment in which all students feel comfortable to study and relax with staff and fellow students.
The Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS)
During the course of your study at Monash University, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are encouraged to engage personal tutors, funded under the ITAS program. CAIS Coordinator - Indigenous Student Services will assist with applying for this assistance.
