MA Courses
MA in Critical Theory
The MA in Critical Theory offered by the Centre may be taken by research only or by coursework and research. See the Faculty of Arts information about Research Masters for up-to-date information about entrance requirements and completion requirements.
Candidates for the MA by Research complete a thesis of 30,000 to 40,000 words on an approved topic, weighted at 100% of the mark for the degree. Candidates for the MA by Research and Coursework must complete 24 points of coursework at level five and are expected to submit a thesis of 20,000 to 25,000 words, weighted at 66 per cent of the mark for the degree. The MA will normally be completed in one-and-a-half years of full-time study (three years part-time).
The minimum entry requirements are an honours degree with first class (or second class division A) honours, or an MQual with first class (or second class division A) honours with a grade of distinction or above for the research component, in an appropriate discipline.
The following units are offered by the Centre at fifth-year level. Not all are available in any one year, so it is important that students consult the Gradaute Coordinator about the organisation of their course.
- CRT5030 Poetics
- CRT5070 Lacan and subjectivity
- CRT5100 Deleuze and Foucault
- CRT5200 Semiotics and Poststructuralism
- CRT5225 Hermeneutics
- CRT5830 Popular culture and ethics
Note that the minimum pass grade for units in the Master of Arts is 60 C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in every unit and for the thesis.
For further information about the program and units offered in 2008 please consult the Centre's entry in the Postgraduate Handbook or contact the Centre's Graduate Coordinator, Professor Andrew Milner.
Masters Qualifying in Critical Theory with a research component
For those students wishing to do advanced work in the Centre, but who lack the required entry qualification of a successful Honours course in an appropriate discipline, the Centre also offers a MQual course, consisting of 24 points at fourth-year level, including a minor thesis. The structure of the course is that of the BA Honours course. See the Postgraduate Handbook for further information.
