1. What is the Chinese Incountry Program?
什么是中国留学班？
The Chinese Incountry Program is a highly intensive short term Chinese language training program taught at four Chinese universities in Shanghai and Beijing respectively.
蒙纳士大学中国留学班是蒙纳士大学文科院中国研究系与中国上海、北京和昆明四所大学联合举办的短期中文强化班。
The Chinese Incountry Program caters for learners of all levels, from absolute beginners to native speakers of Chinese. It allows students to complete the equivalent of one or two semesters of Monash Chinese language study in 3 or 6 weeks in a totally Chinese language and cultural environment. The teaching materials, contact hours, course outlines, methods of assessment and workload of the Chinese Incountry Program units are identical to those of the corresponding Chinese language units offered by the Chinese Studies Program in Melbourne.

With strong support from Monash International, the Chinese Incountry Program has grown into the largest of its kind in the world. In the past seven years, more than 1300 students from Monash and other Australian universities, schools, businesses and government institutions have joined our program and traveled to China.

What Chinese units are offered at Shanghai, Beijing and Kunming?

We will run all main language streams (Chinese language units 1 to 12) at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) in Shanghai.

We offer two Chinese translation related units at Civil Aviation Management Institute of China (CAMIC) in Beijing. These two Chinese translation units are specifically designed to help students build up Chinese-English translation skills and basic knowledge and skills related to inter-cultural communication.
We will also offer one business related translation unit at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE).

3. How do I enroll into the Chinese Incountry Program?

Online applications open on Monday, 4August 2008 and close on Friday September12. You can apply via the Chinese Incountry program website at http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/chinese/incountry/.

Once we have received your online application, you will be sent an email with further instructions.
All students are then required to get approval from their home faculty. Please note that students must get approval from their home Faculty in order to proceed to the next steps of the application process.
Buseco students must satisfy two criteria imposed by the Business and Economic Faculty. All students must have completed at least two semesters at Monash University and have an average of at least 60% for all units.

While most applications procedures can be completed online, all applicants are required to attend an interview with one of the program coordinators.

4. If I am currently enrolled in a double degree with Arts and Business and Economics, do I need to get approval from both Faculties?
我现在是文科院和商业与经济学学院的双学位学生，我是否需要两所学院都批准我的申请？
Yes. All students currently enrolled in a double degree with Arts and Business and Economics must go to the Arts Faculty first for approval. Once you have been given a memo indicating that you are approved, you must take the memo and the Faculty permission form to the Business and Economics Faculty for approval.
*Please note that this rule only applies to students currently enrolled in a double degree of Arts and Business and Economics.

5. How many credit points will I receive for participating in the Chinese Incountry Program?
我参加留学班能得到多少学分？
After successfully completing the 3 week unit, you will receive 6 Monash credit points. This is equivalent to a semester unit at Monash.
如果你能够顺利完成中国留学班三周的学习，你将获得六个蒙纳士大学的学分，这相当于在蒙纳士大学一个学期内选修一门课程的学分。
If you enrolled in the 6 week unit, you will receive 12 Monash credit points. This is equivalent to two units at Monash.

Students from other universities/institutions who have received permission to undertake study in the Program from their home institution will be able to transfer their Monash credits.

6. I am not a Monash student. Will I receive any recognition for participating in the Chinese Incountry Program?

All Chinese Incountry Program participants from institutions other than Monash will receive a certificate from the Chinese host institution acknowledging the successful completion of their enrolled unit, in addition to a letter of certification from Monash (on request).
如果顺利通过考核，所有参加中国留学班的非蒙纳士同学都将得到一份中国大学的证书，证明你顺利完成了所选课程的学习。如果需要，蒙纳士大学还可以为你出具一份证明信。
7. If I am a Cross-Institutional studies student how do I get my credit to count at my home university?
如果我是跨校选课的学生，怎样才能把留学班获得的学分转成我注册学习的大学的学分？
The academic record at your university will be automatically updated to show that you have enrolled into the program, although it will not state your mark once the program has been completed. Students need to request a Monash academic transcript which will state their mark, from the Monash Student Services Centre (http://www.adm.monash.edu.au/service-centre/academic-transcripts.html). A small fee applies.

8. If I am a Single Unit studies student, will I receive any form of recognition once I have completed the unit?

All students participating in the Chinese Incountry Program will receive a certificate from the Chinese host institution acknowledging the successful completion of their enrolled unit. When students log into their Monash Portal (via http://my.monash.edu.au), it will show them as being enrolled in the Program.

9. If I am not an Arts student, how do I apply?
如果我不是文科院的学生，该怎样申请？
Individual faculty’s policies regarding study abroad programs do vary. It is the student’s responsibility to check with the home faculty before lodging an application with us. If your home faculty doesn’t approve your application, you will not be allowed to participate in the Chinese Incountry Program.
蒙纳士大学不同院系对于参加海外留学班有不同的规定。同学们需要在申请前向你注册所在院系查询。如果你注册所在院系不批准你参加中国留学班的申请，你就不能参加留学班。
10. How much will it cost this year?
今年的学费是多少？
For the 2008-09 Chinese Incountry Program, tuition fees are $1800 for the 3-week program and $2800 for the 6-week program.

Accommodation fee rates will be published soon. In 2007-08, accommodation in a hotel-style twin-share room in Shanghai was about US$9 per night per student, and in Beijing it was US$8 per night per student. . For the University of International Business and Economics, a four shared apartment suite was RMB220 per night perper suite . Finalized accommodation fees will be published on our website.
我们将于近期公布住宿费。去年（2007-08年度），宾馆式管理的双人间学生住宿上海外国语大学每人每晚相当于九美元；中国民航管理干部学院每人每晚相当于八美元。对外经贸大学的住宿费（四人一套公寓）去年为每套房每晚人民币220元。最后确定的价格将在网上公布。
Please note: accommodation fees are to be made directly to the Chinese host university after arrival in China. Payment can be made in credit card and cash in US Dollars or the equivalent amount in Chinese currency (Renminbi) in Shanghai, and in cash in Chinese currency only in Beijing.

Other costs such as transportation (taxi and public transportation), communication (telephone and mobile), food, and other daily expenses are usually much cheaper than in Australia.

11. Where will I be staying in Shanghai,Beijing or Kunming?

The Chinese host universities will provide comfortable, hotel-style, twin-share or four shared student accommodation within university campuses at a very reasonable price (See FAQ9).
中方大学将为同学们以合理的价格提供位于校园内的宾馆式管理的双人间或四人间学生住宿（详情请见你问我答问题9）。
12. What does my fee cover?
我交的学费包括了些什么？
Student enrolment fees cover tuition, textbooks and extra-curricula excursions.
Students need to pay for their airfare, travel in China, accommodation, living expenses, and any other incidental charges.
注册时交的费用包括学费、书本费和与教学有关的参观项目。
你还应该支付自己的机票费、中国国内旅行费、住宿费、生活费和其他费用。

13. How do I withdraw from the Chinese Incountry Program?

14. How do I pay for my unit?
怎样付费？
Once you have registered successfully, and received written notice that you have been accepted into the Program, an invoice will be sent out to you.
Payment methods will be listed on your invoice. Please note that NO payments will be accepted by the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics School office.

15. By what date do I have to pay?

All tuition fees should be paid as soon as possible and must be paid no later than the deadline set in your invoice. Once the program commences, Monash staff stationed at the Chinese host university will receive a list of students enrolled and paid for the program.
付款通知单上有付款日期。学费应该在付款通知上的截止日期前尽早交付。一旦留学班开学，蒙纳士留学班驻上海、北京或昆明的老师将会收到未付费学生名单，并作相应的处理。
16. What If I can't pay on time?
如果不能按时付费怎么办？
Please understand that payment must be made by the date specified on your invoice and unpaid fees will result in you being unable to participate in the Chinese Incountry Program.
请注意：学费必须在付费通知上注明的的截止日期以前交付。不按时交费可能导致你无法参加中国留学班的学习。

Yes - you will need to make arrangements with them to repay your grant. The Chinese Incountry Program coordinator will also notify Monash Abroad of your non-participation.

20. I am a Chinese student. Am I allowed to stay with family?

Yes, if you have immediate family living in the same city you can stay with them, provided you inform us and provide us with accurate contact information.

21. Am I allowed to find my own accommodation?

Unless you have immediate family in Shanghai,Beijing or Kunming, participants are not allowed to find their own accommodation.

22. If I have a health problem can I still participate in the CIP?
如果我的身体不好，我可以参加中国留学班吗？
Yes, if you provide a doctor's certificate stating that you are fit to travel abroad.
Please ensure that you are able to manage any chronic health problems, including having an adequate supply of any required prescription drugs (check with your doctor for more details).
