Chinese for Australia

Introduction

Brief Introduction

Chinese for Australia contains interactive exercises designed for Monash University beginning, intermediate and advanced-intermediate level Chinese language students. Some of the exercises form an integral part of class material, while others are supplementary and aim to consolidate and extend the learning done during class. The exercises are enhanced by web tasks, enabling learners to visit authentic language environments where they can utilise and extend their language skills and cultural understanding. While not intended as a complete Chinese course, Chinese for Australia may prove useful to those looking for self-study materials or wishing to maintain previous language study.

Chinese for Australia is supported by links to websites and other resources including both specific study materials for Monash students of Chinese as well as resources wider a field, which will also be of use to those who wish to expand their knowledge of Chinese language and culture.

Beginners Chinese: Beginers

Chinese for Australia Beginners is designed for beginning level students of Chinese at Monash. The interactive language exercises have been developed as supplements to the material delivered during classes and aim to consolidate and extend class learning, allowing students to work independently at their own pace. The exercises relate to corresponding lessons in Xin Hanyu jiaocheng I (Beijing: Beijing University press, 2000). A small number of simple web tasks is provided, enabling learners to visit authentic language environments where they can utilise and extend their language skills and cultural understanding.

Intermediate Chinese: Intermediate

Chinese for Australia Intermediate consists of a series of thematically-based interactive exercises involving reading and listening comprehension and conversation practice. A small number of web tasks is provided, enabling learners to visit authentic language environments where they can utilise and extend their language skills and cultural understanding. How to Use This Site (system requirements)

1) This site has been developed with and tested on Windows XP (Windows 2000/98) with Internet Explorer 6.x & Internet Explorer 5.5, however the site is optimized for Internet Explorer 6.0 with the recommended plug-ins etc. mentioned below. All attempts have been made to make this site viewable in a broad range of browsers, however, full functionality can only be assured for those systems and browsers mentioned here.

2) You will need a JavaScript 1.2 capable browser for all the interactive exercises in the site. The browsers mentioned above are JavaScript 1.2 capable.

If you see a green tick in the table cell to the right of this text then you have a functional JavaScript enabled browser. If not, then either; you have JavaScript disabled or you do not have a JavaScript capable browser.

3) This site uses Chinese characters extensively and some sections of the site give you the option to type Chinese. Your browser/operating system will need to have Chinese language support installed to view/type Chinese Characters. We recommend using the Chinese Language support built into Windows 2000/XP* or the support that can be added to Internet Explorer 6.x/5.5** for Windows 98.

* In Windows XP/2000 language support for Chinese is built into the operating system. Search your Windows XP/2000 help system for the phrase "install East Asian language files" (Windows XP) or "install additional languages" (Windows 2000) to find out more about this function.

** In Internet Explorer 5.x on Windows 95/98 the Chinese language support and Global IME (Input Method Editor - required to type Chinese) can be installed from the Windows Update page on the Internet.

4) Audio in this site is provided in the QuickTime file format. You can get the free QuickTime 6* Player from the QuickTime web site.

N.B. The audio is encoded as 24 kHz, 16 bits MP3 (good quality) as such you may experience some delay when listening to audio if you are accessing this web site over a slow connection (56kb modem or less).

* The QuickTime 6 Player is required, as many of the audio based interactions rely on its functionality, however, this functionality is not available for Internet Explorer on Macintosh OSs.

Addendum

The following OS/Browser combinations are recommended for viewing this site:

Windows - 98, 2000, XP (Me has not been tested but should work) with Chinese/Unicode Language Support and QuickTime 6 installed/enabled plus Internet Explorer 5.5 or above (6 preferred) or Netscape 6.x or above.
