Accessing the required skills from international markets: a summary
by Bob Birrell, Centre for Population and Urban Research, Monash University, May 2006

This report presents the key points from the research paper titled Brain drain, Brain gain: accessing the required skills commissioned under the auspices of the Minerals Industry National Skills Shortages Strategy (NSSS) and funded by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DeST).
The study was undertaken by the Centre for Population and Urban Research (Monash University) and the Australian Centre for Population Research (Australian National University). The purpose of the study was to review the extent to which Australia’s skilled migration system is contributing to the workforce of the Australian minerals industry and to provide advice on initiatives which might assist the minerals industry to enhance its ability to use skilled migration to address current and future skill demands.
The research assesses the role played by overseas migrants in the minerals industry over the past decade and the potential under the existing permanent and temporary entry visa sub-classes for migration to contribute to current skill shortages in the industry.
