Fred Smith is an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the Centre for Population Research.
Biography
Fred Smith undertook his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Sheffield, UK. He subsequently held research positions at the University of California, San Diego, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, Harwell, and the CSIRO National Measurement Laboratory, Sydney, before joining the Department of Physics, Monash University, as a Senior Lecturer in 1974. He was appointed Professor in 1976 and Head of Department in 1981.
He joined La Trobe University as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) in March 1991 and his appointment was extended to include Chief Executive Officer, La Trobe University Research and Development Park in October 1995. He was Acting Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences during 1999.
On his retirement from La Trobe in December 2004 he was awarded the status of Emeritus Professor.
He has played an active role in the scientific community in a variety of roles and his service was recognised by the appointment as a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2005. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences (ATSE) and Engineering, the Australian Institute of Physics and the Institute of Physics (London). He is currently the Honorary Secretary of the ATSE and the Royal Society of Victoria.
Fred has been actively associated with the Centre for Population and Urban Research for over a decade and serves as a member of the editorial board for the Centre’s journal, People and Place. He is a regular contributor to People and Place and has contributed to Centre reports in the areas of the migration of professionals (particularly the Brain Drain issue), equality and access in education and social issues, and most recently a study of the Victorian economy.
