Dr Ian R. Dobson is a honarary research fellow in the Centre for Population and Urban Research and director of Educational Policy Institute (Australasia). His qualifications are BComm (Melb), GradDipLibrarianship (RMIT) and PhD (Monash). Ian's PhD, awarded in 2005, is titled Equity, Social Mobility and Australian Higher Education Policy.
Biography
Ian has spent much of his career as a university administrator, including periods working in library administration, university strategic and resource planning, statistical analysis and as a policy adviser to senior university staff. Over the course of that career he has worked at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, the University of Melbourne and Monash University. In recent years he has worked as a consultant, undertaking projects on behalf of Monash and several other universities, the Department of Employment, Education and Training, the Australian Vice-Chancellor's Committee and the Australian Council of Deans of Science (ACDS).
Research
Ian’s research has covered access and equity issues, student financial support and welfare, university funding, relative student performance and university staffing. He has extensive experience in collection, analysis and interpretation of higher education enrolment and related statistical data relevant to the higher education sector.
Publications
Ian has authored or co-authored more than forty papers published in scholarly refereed journals, several book chapters and substantial reports for the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee, the Australian Council of Deans of Science (ACDS) and the Victorian Department of Education and Training. Reports for the ACDS on university science and on information technology were published in 2007. He has also presented the results of his research at more than fifty conferences, mainly in Europe. Ian is editor of the Journal of Higher Education Policy & Management, published under the Routledge imprint by Taylor & Francis.
