About Criminology

Crime is an issue which all citizens and governments confront on a daily basis. Many thousands of people in the public and private sectors are employed in dealing with the prevention and consequences of crime. They make important decisions about the daily lives and freedoms of thousands of citizens. The causes of crime and how it should be dealt with are the subject of intense debate.

This course provides students with the skills to understand the complexities of crime, to learn about the various stages of the criminal justice system, to critically analyse its workings and tensions and to explore alternative strategies.

Questions will be explored, such as:

Criminology students can combine an interest in areas such as police, courts, corrections, law and order, justice, causes of crime, crime prevention and victims of crime in order to broaden their career options in areas of Criminology.

Arts graduate students are provided with skills which can be used in both the private and public sectors. The ability to conduct research, to think and analyse critically and independently, and to communicate at all levels, is for life.
