Post Graduate Studies

Each year Criminology holds a two day fully funded off campus PhD retreat which is open to all Criminology postgraduates and attended by all supervising staff members. The aim of the retreat is to provide a focused time for postgraduates and staff to concentrate on developing research and writing and to create an intellectually and socially supportive environment for postgraduate research.

Feedback on the 2007 retreat included the following comments from postgraduate students.

'It was a really valuable opportunity to get together with staff and other postgraduate students to share ideas and provide feedback for one another. It is such an important part of the PhD journey to get feedback and contributions from others about one's work, but also to develop skills in contributing to others'.

'What a fabulous experience that was! I just wanted to let you know how incredibly inspired I was by the people I met this week. I feel I have made some important new friends who are not only inspirational, but amazingly generous and supportive. Not having met the other postgrads up til now, I think the benefits of having done so in such a gorgeous, informal setting will really help me to get through the hard yards that lie ahead. I'm looking forward very much to working with you next year, but I now feel that the support I will have as I move through the PhD has been quadrupled - that's a very nice feeling'.

'Thank-you! The PhD retreat is such a fantastic opportunity to get to know the other postgraduate students in a mutually respectful and highly constructive environment. This process is so beneficial to all of us, regardless of whether we started our PhD's one week or two years ago. We are all so grateful to have this opportunity to share our work, our fears and our hopes with each other. Getting feedback on my work from staff and other postgraduate students was an incredibly exciting and terrifying experience, which has helped my confidence in my work and the quality of the work immensely. Thanks very much'.
