Major and minor requirements

2000 - present day

Major: A major is three years of study in a single discipline, totaling 48 points. The major consists of

  • A first year level sequence (12 points)
    AND EITHER
  • 12 points of second year level studies (normally 2 units) and 24 points of third-year level studies (normally 4 units)
    OR
  • 18 points of second-year level studies (normally 3 units) and 18 points of third-year level studies (normally 3 units.)

While course regulations specify the basic structure of any major in the Faculty of Arts, different Schools and Centres may have specific requirements for their own discipline, such as the completion of a core (compulsory) unit. You should familiarise yourself with the major requirements found here and then check individual discipline requirements under the Areas of Study section.

Minor

A minor is units in a single discipline totaling 24 points including no more than 12 points at first year level.

Normally students complete a first-year sequence (12 points), followed by at least 12 points (normally two 6 point units) of study at second year level.

While course regulations specify the basic structure of any minor in the Faculty of Arts, different Schools and Centres may have specific requirements for their own discipline, such as the completion of a core (compulsory) unit. You should familiarise yourself with the minor requirements found here and then check individual discipline requirements under the Areas of Study section.

NOTE: It is possible to study all units towards the minor at an advanced level. Where schools only offer a minor in this form, this will be indicated under the relevant discipline heading.

A Major prior to 2000

If you began your Arts degree prior 2000 you may want to complete a 52 point major which was the standard major for the year you commenced your degree.

NB: Most Arts units are now worth six points. This means that if you do want to complete a 52 points major you will need to take a combination of 8 and 6 point units. See "Change from 8 to 6 credit point units" (below) for further information.

Major between 1996-1999

From 1996 - 1999 the standard major was three years of study in a single discipline, totalling 52 points.

The first year of the major consisted of one first-year level sequence (12 points), followed by a least 16 points (normally two units), at second-year level, followed by 24 points (normally 3 units) at third-year level.

Major before 1996

Prior to 1996 a major was three years of study in a single discipline, totalling 52 points.

The major consisted of a first-year level sequence (totalling 12 points) followed by a total of 40 points (normally 5 units) at the second and third-year levels, with at least 16 points (normally 2 units) at both second-year and third-year. The important difference is that the fifth unit could be taken at either the second or the third-year level.

Change from 8 to 6 credit point units

In 2001 the Arts Faculty moved from later year units with a value of 8 credit points to units with a value of 6 and 12 point units (or multiples thereof) at second and third year level.

If you have completed later year units with a value of 8 credit points within your Arts studies, and you have not already been in contact with the Faculty of Arts about your future course planning and requirements to course complete, you should complete an "on-line request for course progression check" to receive further advice.
