Areas of Study
The Areas of Study lists all the disciplines offered by the Faculty at an undergraduate, honours and postgraduate (coursework) level. It outlines which School or Centre each discipline belongs to, how to complete a first-year sequence, minor, or major in a discipline, and lists any units from other disciplines that can be counted towards its sequences, minors, or majors.
What disciplines can I do in my course?
Because of individual course requirements not all disciplines are available in all courses. To view details of disciplinary requirements please choose the relevant course level to go to the full index:
To view a full list of disciplines, course availability, and campuses of offering, please visit the Arts disciplines section of this site.
Information on the Faculty's research programs can be accessed at the Arts Research site.
What unit information is included?
Not all units listed for each discipline are available every year because some of the units in the Faculty of Arts are taught on a 'rotational' basis - ie some units are only offered in alternate years. Additionally, because each discipline regularly updates its curriculum, some units will no longer be available as they have been replaced with newer ones.
The unit lists are designed to show all possible unit combinations in each discipline so that the information is useful for all students regardless of whether they have been studying for a number of years or are just commencing. This means that currently available units as well as units that are no longer taught will be listed, and it will be necessary to check unit availability, campus of offering, unit description, and assessment requirements in the current University Handbook. Links to the Handbook are included in every discipline's unit list.
It is important to be aware that as the subject matter of units is updated sometimes their titles change too. To keep things as simple as possible all of the units listed in this site have their current title. This means that you need to remember that regardless of the title, if you have completed a unit with the same unit code, you cannot take that unit again!
What if I want to do a unit that is not listed?
The requirements for majors, minors and courses are designed to ensure graduates acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities in their chosen disciplines.
However, sometimes due to your study interests or the availability of units in a particular year you may need to request that a core unit, or an additional elective be approved for inclusion in your major or minor discipline. This is called a variation to study requirements.
For information on how to request a variation to your major, minor or course requirements please visit the Variation to Study Requirements section of our administration site.
