Changing your enrolment

You can change your units after enrolling online. If you change your mind about one or more of your units, it is possible to discontinue and/or replace them with other units up until the end of the second week of semester. Do this via WES or, if you need authorisation or encounter problems, complete an Enrolment Amendment form and lodge it with the Arts Coursework Office.

The key to changing your enrolment is timing

There are deadlines by which you can:

  • discontinue a unit AND take up a new one without paying any fees OR have it showing on your academic transcript;
  • discontinue a unit (but not take up a new one) without paying any fees, BUT having it show as WD (withdrawn) on your academic transcript;

If you discontinue a unit after these deadlines tuition fees* will apply and, depending on the date of your discontinuation, the unit will show as either WD (withdrawn) or N (Fail) on your transcript.
*See Course Fees information. Students studying on a CSP basis have unit(s) included in their Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) if they do not discontinue from them by the deadlines.

To avoid paying for a unit (regardless of whether you have stopped attending classes or failed to complete the required assessment) it is vital that you familiarise yourself each year with the important administrative dates (deadlines) listed in the Principal Dates section of the Monash Website. These dates can also be found in the Student Resource Guide.

Fees

Remember:

  • You do not need to pay any fees at the time of enrolment. You will be sent an invoice at a later date.
  • Most students will be able to complete CSP-HELP (formerly HECS-HELP) or FEE-HELP forms online.

Please contact the Service Centre on 9902 6011 if you have any questions regarding your tuition fees.

Accessing computer services and facilities

All students need a Monash computer account to access the following services and facilities:

  • Workstations in laboratories
  • Course and subject data stored on the World Wide Web
  • Word processing and spreadsheets
  • Monash portal
  • Email
  • Printing services
  • Examination results
  • Re-enrolment information
  • Library services

Refer to the Computer Labs site for computer access details.

Arts Academic Language and Learning Unit

The Arts Academic Language and Learning unit runs general skills-based courses such as writing, grammar, oral presentations, reading, and note taking, as well as some courses specific to discipline areas, such as 'writing for sociology'.

It is strongly recommended that you attend some of these programs. There is no cost for the programs and information is available from the AALLU office located on your home campus. For contact details and room locations please visit the AALLU website.

Handbook

The University Handbook is the official document outlining degree and unit requirements. Students can access the Handbook online.

Examinations

Your lecturer or tutor will provide information about the format of the examination in the last week/s of lectures. Examinations are generally of 2 or 3 hours duration and are conducted at the end of each semester. A provisional examination timetable is available via your portal about 5 weeks before the end of each semester at which time you can report any clashes of examinations to the Examinations Manager (see the Exams site). The final examination timetable is available about 3 weeks before the commencement of the formal examination period.

Examination timetables are not mailed to you and examination information cannot be given over the telephone. Please read the examination timetable carefully and attend all examination/s on the advertised day/s. Misreading the timetable is not grounds for special consideration.

Results

Results are released at the end of the examination period each semester. You will be able to access your results via your my.Monash portal.

Arts Clubs and Societies

The Arts Society at the Clayton Campus is located in Room 633, level 6, Menzies building at the Clayton campus. There is also an Arts Club open to all Arts students at the Caulfield campus. For information, contact the Student Union, level 1, S Block.

Postgraduate Students

Core units and credit average

Many Arts postgraduate programs require that you complete core units with a minimum Credit (60%) result in addition to a credit average for all units in your course. This requirement is usually restricted to Masters courses. Information on this requirement can be found in the Postgraduate Handbook.

Articulation

Postgraduate programs are offered at different levels: Graduate/Faculty Certificate, Post/Graduate Diploma and Masters. Generally speaking these programs follow on from each other. For instance, the Graduate Certificate of Communications and Media Studies is the same as the first 24 points of the Master of Communications and Media Studies. You may have been offered a place in a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma instead of the Masters course you applied for. Usually, this is because a Masters program has more stringent entry requirements.

Once you have successfully completed the requirements for your Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma (with a credit average) you can 'articulate' to the next level of the program. Simply submit a course transfer application form to the Arts Coursework Office.

Need Help?

Many of the problems that you encounter, other students have also faced. You may like to consult the frequently asked questions list. If you are still having trouble enrolling in your units you can submit a query via email to Coursework@arts.monash.edu.au or call us on 9905-2107 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm or visit the coursework student services counter which is open Monday, Wednesday - Friday 9am to 4pm and Tuesdays 11am to 4pm.
