Step four: choose your units
Which units do you want to study?
You can find out what units are offered each year by accessing the unit information sections of the undergraduate or postgraduate University Handbooks. Each unit code is made up of three letters and four numbers: the letters refer to the discipline (area of study) and the first number indicates year level, eg PHL1010 is a Philosophy first year level unit.
Postgraduate courses usually have core requirements and are limited to specific disciplinary areas and units. In some cases your unit choices will have been organised as part of your application process. You may need to choose additional 'elective' units (ie units that are not 'core' to course requirements).
You can view all course information in the Postgraduate Arts Handbook and you can discuss your choices with your postgraduate course coordinator - the phone number is on the list included in your enrolment pack.
The postgraduate
handbook has a list of units available for your course. Simply click
on the units to display the unit synopsis, availability, teaching
location and assessment. It is a good idea to read through all the
units available and write down your choices so that you can enrol
in your units via WES
without needing to refer back to the handbook.
You can
also view the 2008 Timetable
(see Step nine) to check the suitability of the day/s and time/s
your chosen units will be taught.
Undergraduate enrolment requires that you decide on which disciplines (areas of study) you are interested in and which individual units within those disciplines/areas you want to enrol in. Arts offers over 50 different areas of study and you can choose units from a number of these areas, depending on your course structure (see the Course Structure section). By visiting the Arts Areas of Study website you can see what disciplines are available - this will give you an idea of what you can specialise in during your course. Think about what you're good at, what you enjoy doing, and what your career goals are.
What if you want to do a language unit?
Students with prior background in a language may be able to commence mid-year, subject to approval of the program. A number of entry points are available in both semesters - further information can be found via the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics web page. Students should contact the School directly for information on mid-year entry and placement testing in the language of their choice, by phone on 99052223 or 99052281, or email LCL.Enquiries@arts.monash.edu.au.
Why do some units require 'authorisation'?
A small number of Arts units require authorisation because place numbers are limited. WES enrolment cannot be used for these units. Many research units require consultation with the School before enrolment can be processed. To enrol in a unit that requires authorisation you must complete an Enrolment Amendment form and have it signed by the relevant school/faculty.
Once you have been authorised to study one of these units, your enrolment will be processed by a member of the Arts Coursework Office team. You can find out which units require authorisation by visiting the Units that require authorisation section of the Arts website.
Public Relations (PRJ): Public Relations units available at the Caulfield campus are restricted to the Bachelor of Arts at Caulfield only and the Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) at Caulfield only. Students enrolled in these courses are required to complete an Application to Take Public Relations Units form to be considered for these units. Please note this restriction applies to Faculty of Arts students only.
Credit for previous tertiary studies
Studies completed at other Australian tertiary institutions, and some international institutions, will normally be awarded as either general or specific credit, but there are limits - for help with this please visit our credit for previous tertiary studies section. For more information on Arts credit policies and procedures please visit the Credit section of our website.
Usually, if you have successfully completed a full year's study of first-year level units in one or more disciplines at another university, you will be eligible to enrol in second-year level units in those disciplines.
Any information on prior studies supplied at the time of your course application will have been pre-assessed for eligible credit. Information on what you have been awarded has been included in the enrolment pack together with a course map showing how this credit fits into your course structure. If you wish to accept the credit that has been awarded, please sign the Credit Work Sheet and return it to the Arts Coursework Office using the reply paid envelope in your offer package.
Note: If your credit assessment has not been included it could still be in the assessment process.
How to apply for or amend credit after enrolment has finished
To be granted credit that has not been pre-assessed or to make changes later on in your course you will need to apply by completing a Credit Application form.
