1. I am enrolled in a unit that I no longer want to do, can I drop it?
(OR: I don't like the class I'm in, can I drop it?)
The key to changing your enrolment is timing
There are deadlines by which you can:
- drop a unit AND take up a new one without paying any fees OR have it showing on your academic transcript;
- drop a unit (but not take up a new one) without paying any fees, BUT having it show as WD (withdrawn)on your academic transcript;
- drop a unit, BUT you have to pay tuition fees * AND it will show as WD on your transcript;
- drop a unit, PAY tuition fees * and have it show on transcript as a FAIL.
* Students who are studying on a CSP basis would also have the relevant unit(s) count towards their Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) if they failed to discontinue it by the required deadlines.
Missing certain deadlines means you will have to pay for a unit(s) regardless of whether you completed the required assessment or stopped attending classes. Missing these deadlines could cost you thousands of dollars over the duration of your whole course. All important deadline dates are listed in the Principal Dates section of the Monash Website, look in the Student Resource Guide , or ask at the Arts Coursework Office.
When you change your enrolment you should always keep in mind your overall course structure. You have the opportunity to change your enrolment without penalty during the first two weeks of each semester, either via your My.Monash portal or in person at the Arts Coursework Office. If you wish to speak with a course adviser during this period you should contact the Arts Office on your home campus.
See Arts re-enrolment information(Amending enrolment details) for further information.
2. I'm trying to re-enrol and I'm being told that I have a fee block, what is that and what should I do?
Fee blocks usually occur due to unpaid fees or fines. It means that until you sort out the outstanding fees you won't have access to exam results or be able to re-enrol. To fix this you will need to talk with the Fees Section. It is a good idea to go over your confirmation of enrolment or fees advice slip and find any proof of payment (eg. credit card statements) BEFORE you approach the Fees Section.
See Arts Current Students (Fees and Scholarships) for further information.
3. How Do I Use the On-Line Enrollment (WES) System to Re-Enrol?
(OR: I am having problems with on-line enrollment (WES))
The Web Enrolment System - WES - is an online enrollment system available to most Monash University students.
Before enrolling, you should always check the timetable for unit lecture and tutorial times.
There is an online tutorial and a list of frequently asked questions available on the WES website if you are experiencing problems. See theArts re-enrolment information (WES information) for further information.
4. How do I go about fixing the problems I have with Allocate+?
(OR: By what date do I need to register for Allocate+?)
Allocate+ is an on-line class-listing system that sorts you into lectures, tutorials and seminars based on your preferences, whilst avoiding clashes. However, sometimes timetable changes occur and clashes may arise. You are able to fix these clashes on line.
To use Allocate+ you will need to enroll in your chosen units via your My Monash: WES portal during the web enrolment period. Wait for 48 hours and then go to Allocate+ to complete class listing.
For units that are not class listing through Allocate+, you should contact the relevant School.
There is an online tutorial and a list of frequently asked questions available on the allocate website if you are experiencing problems.
5. I deferred my place at Monash this year, how do I go about enrolling in for next year?
(OR: How do I return from deferment?)
After being offered a place at Monash, some students choose to take a break from study and defer their enrolment. This means that a place is held for them in a particular course, but they will not study for a minimum period of one semester or a maximum period of one year.
If you were offered a place in the Faculty of Arts for the first time in (for example) 2003 and deferred that place until 2004, you will be required to enroll in January 2004. An enrolment package will be forwarded to you in mid-January advising you of enrolment procedures.
International students should contact Monash International directly regarding deferment.
See the Arts Enrolment page for further information.
6. I've just moved house, how do I update my address so I receive all mailed out materials?
(OR: I've just received my enrolment details and my date of birth isn't correct, how can I fix it?)
Changes to your address details can be made via your My Monash Portal or lodged on a Variation to Personal Details form (or in writing) and submitted at the Student Services Branch or Arts Faculty Office on your home campus.
Changes or corrections to your personal details (e.g. name or date of birth) must be lodged on a Variation to Personal Details form (or requested in writing) with supporting documentation where relevant (e.g. marriage) and submitted at the Student Services Branch on your home campus.
See Arts Administrative Information for further information.
7. I'm just not coping with a full load at uni, can I change to part-time?
A little known fact is that it is very easy for most undergraduate students to go part time. You just need to fill in an enrolment amendment form and lodge it with the Faculty Office. However, you should carefully consider whether you should go part-time if you:
- are an international student - there are visa considerations;
- See the Monash International page on Australian Government requirements for international students: Student Visas for more information.
- receive Youth Allowance, Austudy or another government payment - there is a minimum load you must have; and/or
- See the Monash Equity and Diversity Centre's page for more information.
- are approaching the maximum time permissible for your course.
- Visit the Arts Current Students(Policies and Regulations) for more information.
If you are an Honours or Postgraduate student you should have a talk with your supervisor and find out if going part-time is a viable option.
Finally, be aware that there are strict deadlines for changes to enrolment. These dates are listed in your Monash Diary, or are available from the Faculty Office.
See Arts Current Students for further information.
8. I need a break from Uni. How do I take an Intermission (Leave of Absence)?
(OR: I need to take time off from University, can I?)
At some point in your degree you may need to take an intermission or leave of absence ( LOA ) from study. This may be for a variety of reasons, financial, personal, travel related or health, amongst many others. This is often an important and healthy decision to make.
Before intermitting, consider talking with a Faculty Course Adviser, someone on the Faculty that you are comfortable with, a counselor, or family or friends before making your decision. Alternatively, email TaSP (Transition and Student Progress) on tasp@arts.monash.edu.au with any queries you might have.
You may take an intermission for a semester or a full year at a time. If further leave is required after a year, you need to re-apply.
If you want to take intermission from your studies, you should lodge an Application for Intermission Form with the Coursework/Faculty Office on your home campus by the due date in the relevant semester. Please carefully consider all the information provided with the application form.
See Arts Administrative Information for further information.
9. I've come to realize that this course just isn't for me. How do I discontinue from my course?
(OR: I want to leave University)
A hard, but sometimes important, decision is often the realisation that ultimately University is not what you want at this point in your life.
Before making your decision, consider talking with a Faculty Course Adviser, someone on the Faculty that you are comfortable with, a counselor or family or friends.
If your reasons for discontinuing have a financial basis, you should also consider speaking with Financial Aid about your options. Most students are unaware of the support that exists from a financial perspective.
Once you have made your decision, you can get the necessary paperwork from the Arts Faculty Office.
See Arts Current Students (Support Services) and Arts Administrative Information for further information.
10. How do I change from a double degree to a single Bachelor of Arts Degree?
(i.e. Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Law)
During the course of your study you may decide that your study interests change, or that outside circumstances (work, family, life in general) alter your original plans for achieving your qualifications. You may decide that a double degree is no longer what you want to do.
To change from a double degree (where one degree is a Bachelor of Arts) to a single Bachelor of Arts degree you need to apply for what is called a course transfer.
The success of your application will be based upon your prior academic record (not your original Enter Score).
You will need to lodge an Application for Course Transfer form with the Faculty ADMINISTERING the degree into which you wish to transfer by the relevant due date.
See Arts Administrative Information for further information.
11. I want to swap degrees/majors, how do I go about it?
Major/Minor:
If you wish to change your major or minor, the best thing to do is make an appointment to see a Faculty Course Adviser.
Whilst you do not need permission to choose a major, when changing mid course an Adviser can help you plot your unit choices to minimise the TIME (and therefore COST) it will take to complete your new major/minor.
Degree:
To change your Degree once you have begun your BA requires paperwork for both the Arts Faculty AND the new Faculty into which you wish to transfer.
You will need to contact the Faculty that administers your desired new Degree and ask what they require for you to transfer.
You will need to lodge an Application for Course Transfer form with the Faculty ADMINISTERING the degree into which you wish to transfer by the relevant due date.
Go to the Arts Faculty Office and ask them how to go about transferring.
See Arts Administrative Information and Course and Unit information for further information.
