Near Pass (NP) Grade Policy

The Faculty of Arts will allow one near pass grade (NP), awarded by the Arts Board of Examiners, in a first-year level sequence in either semester one or semester two for students who have achieved a result in the mark range 45-49, to be counted towards a degree. The unit for which the NP grade has been awarded will be deemed to form the first part of a sequence or to be a prerequisite for further study in a discipline (or equivalent) at first-year level. Where a student is eligible for more than one NP in the relevant semester the choice of unit for which credit is to be gained will be resolved at the Board of Examiners meeting after consultation with the student.

A second near pass grade (NP), awarded at the discretion of the Arts Associate Dean (Teaching), will be permitted to be counted towards a degree where a student has achieved a unit result in the mark range 45-49 where that unit is the final one needed to qualify for the degree.

Near Pass Policy (prior to Semester 2, 2006)

The Faculty policy on NPs is:

"that, except where the Faculty Board in any particular case otherwise determines, one unit in which a near pass (NP) has been awarded may be counted towards a degree"

The Faculty Board has recommended that the following uses of the NP grade be adopted:
