Policy on Review and Remarking of Student Work
NB. This policy outlines the minimum provisions on remarking, and Schools may make more generous arrangements where appropriate (for example where they form part of an assessment contract between the examiner and the student).
That the time limit for student requests for remarking or review of work should be 4 weeks.
Note: The Committee of Graduate Studies recommended (2-01) that the same policy should apply to OPG postgraduate students and to the coursework component of HDR students.
Failed work
All failed work worth 30% or more of the total mark for a subject must be automatically reviewed on a pass/fail basis before the work is returned, except for forms of assessment that do not involve significant academic judgement (such as multiple-choice tests). A record must be kept of the name of the reviewer.
Student appeals
- A student who is dissatisfied with his or her mark for any assignment should in the first instance discuss the matter with the tutor or subject co-ordinator. The student may request that the tutor or subject co-ordinator review the result. Alternatively, the tutor or the subject co-ordinator may agree to a verbal request that the piece be reviewed or remarked by a second person.
- If the student does not wish to discuss his or her mark with the tutor or subject coordinator, or is still dissatisfied after discussion with the subject co-ordinator, then s/he should approach the School Undergraduate Co-ordinator or, if the Undergraduate Coordinator is also the subject co-ordinator, the Head of School.
- In cases where the piece of work is worth 30% or more of the overall mark for the subject, the student may formally request a re-evaluation of the piece. This request must be made in writing, explaining the reasons for the appeal. It should be addressed to the subject co-ordinator, and must make a case in terms of the assessment criteria. The student should request either that the original result be reviewed, or that the piece of work be remarked. Remarking is not available for examinations or tests.
- Where a review is requested, the original piece of work will be re-assessed by a second marker who is informed of the mark awarded, of the assessment criteria, and of the student's reasons for appeal. The final result will be decided in discussion between the two markers. No comments are required from the second marker, but s/he will sign the piece of work before it is returned.
- Where remarking is requested, the student will provide a clean copy of the piece of work. The second marker, who must be an experienced marker, will reassess the piece in line with the assessment criteria, but without access to the original comments or to the result. S/he will provide brief comments to the student. The second mark will become the final mark
- The policy must be clearly advertised to students in subject materials distributed at the beginning of the relevant semester. Students should be warned that both review and remarking may result in a lower mark than the one originally awarded.
If the student remains dissatisfied with the result, the normal University grievance procedures apply.
