Overloading or Exceeding Arts Course Credit Points
Overloading Semester Credit Points
The term ‘overloading’ refers to when you enrol in more than the standard number of credit points in a particular semester.
A standard semester’s workload for a full-time student is 24 credit points—normally four units. Students may overload by up to six points per semester in a calendar year, i.e. up to 30 credit points in one semester in the year.
- Overloading in first-year is not permitted, except for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts Dean's Scholars Program.
- Overloading in later years (i.e. second or third) is permitted.
- In some double degree programs students are expected to overload in later years.
Important: if you overload in a semester and then struggle to meet assessment or attendance requirements because of your workload, please be aware that the fact you are undertaking additional studies will not be suitable as a reason for requesting special consideration.
The above rules for overloading apply to international and local students.
How to Apply
You do not need to request any special permission to overload in the approved criteria listed above.
If you wish to request to overload and you do not meet the criteria listed:
- Download and complete a Request to Overload form [RTF].
- Submit the completed form to the Arts office on your home campus.
Exceeding Course Credit Points
Students have a responsibility to complete course requirements given in the relevant degree regulations and faculty policies, and to not exceed the specified number of credit points for a degree. The total credit points for each and course requirements are provided by the Monash University Handbook.
Students must seek the written approval of the Faculty if they wish to enrol in more than the number of credit points described in the degree regulations as necessary for course completion, or for units which will not contribute to course completion.
Other than in exceptional circumstances, this approval will only be granted for enrolment on full-fee basis.
International Students
International students on a student visa can enrol in a maximum of 12 additional points. International students overloading will need to apply for an extension of visa if more time is required to complete additional studies.
How to Apply
If you wish to request to exceed your course credit points:
- Download and complete a Request to Exceed Course Credit Points form [RTF]
- Submit the completed form to the Arts office on your home campus.
