Classical Studies

Campus availability: Clayton

For further information students should contact the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics.

The Classical studies program is designed to enable students to study the civilisations, cultures and languages of Ancient Greece and Rome. Students can take a first-year sequence in the civilisation and culture of Ancient Greece, or in Latin (at Beginners or Intermediate (post-VCE) level), or in Ancient Greek (at Beginners or Intermediate (post-VCE) level). This allows students to go on to complete a minor sequence in Classical studies specialising in civilisation and culture, Latin or Ancient Greek, or a major sequence in Classical studies by combining at least two of these areas of study.

NB: Where insufficient demand for one of the three disciplines occurs, the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics reserves the right to require students to complete a Minor or Major in Classical Studies by completing units other than those from the discipline concerned.

1st Year Sequence:

A first-year sequence consists of CLA1010 and CLA1020, or CLA1110 and CLA1120, or CLA1210 and CLA1220, or CLA1111 and CLA1121,or CLA1211 and CLA1221.

Minor sequence:

A minor comprises one of the above first-year sequences followed by a further 12 points at second year level chosen from the units listed.

Major sequence:

Students complete standard major chosen from the units listed. The major must include at least 12 points of either Ancient Greek or Latin, completed at any year level.

Students may choose to complete their major using available approved units listed from other Schools provided they also complete at least 12 points of Classics units chosen from the core CLA units listed.

Classical language streams:

It is possible to study up to 36 points of Latin (if all levels from Beginners to Advanced Latin are completed) and/or a maximum of 24 points of Ancient Greek (Introductory to Intermediate).
