New Codes and Titles for Language Programs
The School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics implemented a new coding and titling system for all language units in 2004.
The change was designed to make it easier for students to identify the level at which they should start in a language and how to progress through the major/minor.
Uniformity of coding and language proficiency levels within title
Irrespective of the language program, all core language units will follow the same coding and titling pattern. Each semester-length core unit represents a separate language level (e.g. KOR1010 Korean 1, KOR1020 Korean 2). In all codes, the first digit will indicate the year level, the second and third digits the proficiency level, and the final digit is 0 (e.g. ITA1010). Regardless of year level, all unit versions of the same proficiency level will have the same title (e.g. French Studies 7 will have three different unit versions and codes: FRN1070, FRN2070 and FRN3070).
NB: Study abroad, summer and electives units have retained their old codes and titles.
