The White Rose

Written by Craig Christie, and Harrey Allen. Music by Andrew Patterson. Performed and produced by a cast and crew of sixty second and third year students.

The White Rose tells the story of a student conspiracy against the Nazi government in Germany during World War II, and gave the cast and crew the opportunity to tour to Singapore as a result of generous financial support from the Monash International and Monash Abroad program, and the Pratt Foundation. Many thanks to the Monash Alumni Association in Melbourne and Singapore for their great support.

Road

Written by Jim Cartright. Directed by Tracey Shields-Anderson and Monica White. Presented by Monash University First Year Performing Arts Students.

Road captures images of what it was like to live in a northern industrial town in the 1980s, ravaged by recession, miner’s strikes, unemployment and the policies of Thatcherism. It is a play about dreams, imprisonment and escapism, and expresses the colour and true character of the individuals surviving amongst decay, alchoholism, poverty and unemployment.

Performances: October 23-25 @ 8pm Venue: The Rehearsal Room

Wolf Lullaby

Written by Hilary Bell. Directed by Matt Lockitt.

Director’s Notes:

Hilary Bell’s ‘Wolf Lullaby’ was written as a direct response to the reaction of the James Bulger abduction and murder in 1993. Drawing heavily from this case and the earlier Mary Bell case of 1968, the play examines the issue from the vantage point of the perpetrator’s family, not the victims.

As a text, the play provided wonderful moments of dramatic conflict, counterpointed against the heightened theatrical world of ‘the Wolf’. Our rehearsal room/laboratory gave us the opportunity to confront actors processes head on in the domestic moments, while allowing us the freedom to explore metaphor and theatrical construct in the transition moments. What you’re seeing before you tonight is a direct continuation of not only those processes which were put into place and explored in our ‘laboratory’, but also the hours of research and script analysis and character preparation each of the ensemble undertook as part of their own process.

Performances: 30th October to 1st November

The Cherry Orchard

Written by Anton Chekhov. Directed by Alison Heard. Assistant Director Bryony Wilson. Presented by 1st Year Monash Performing Arts Students.

The play is set at the Cherry Orchard estate where friends, neighbours and servants are preparing for the long-awaited return of Madame Ranevskaya and her daughter Anya. Having fled to Paris after the death of her husband and son five years earlier, Madame returns to Russia where she is faced with financial hardship in the period preceding the Communist Revolution in 1917. Trying desperately to maintain their aristrocratic lifestyle, Madame Ranevskaya and her brother Leonid Gayev ignore the coarse but competent power of an unstoppable new social order. Fading memories of past glory collide with the reality of present chaos and inescapable confrontation with the politics of a new world.
