The Story of Medea
Jason was sent from Greece to Iolcos with the impossible task of stealing the Golden Fleece. Medea was a local princess who fell head over heels in love with him. It was her magic that saved him, and as they made their escape pursued by her father’s army, she killed her half-brother and threw bits of him out of the chariot so that her father would have to stop and perform the burial rites. She was also, allegedly, the grand-daughter of the god Apollo, so she arrived in Greece with a powerful reputation. Years later, when they were both middle aged and Medea’s beauty had faded, Jason makes a political match by marrying the king’s teenage daughter. Medea takes offence.
