Assignment/Essay Lodgement
All assignments/essays need to be submitted to the ECPS School Office or Centre for Drama and Theatre Studies Office. Do not hand your assignment directly to your tutor or another staff member – lodge your work in the School’s (or Centre’s) Essay box. This is to ensure that your assignment can be properly date-stamped, logged and tracked. In each semester assignments submitted up to the last day of the relevant exam period will be logged; assignments will not be accepted after that date unless you have been granted special consideration.
KEEP A DRAFT OR PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR ESSAY: THIS MATTER IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
Any assignment/essay that is not correctly presented (or is illegible) will be handed back, unmarked, and you will be asked to rewrite and resubmit your work. All required work must be submitted in order to pass the unit.
The only exceptions to this rule is when you are enrolled in an ECPS unit on another campus or if you have been requested by your tutor to lodge an additional, electronic copy of your assignment: in both these cases you will find alternate directions in your relevant Unit Reader/Guide. For on-campus Berwick and Caulfield units you submit directly to the campus Faculty of Arts Office.
When you submit your assignment/essay you must complete an essay cover sheet. This is necessary to ensure that your assignment/essay is logged correctly and also because you must complete a signed plagiarism statement every time you submit a piece of work. All assignments are date stamped and electronically logged before being forwarded to your tutor.
NB: You must write your unit code and tutor’s name on the cover sheet. If you do not provide the unit code we can not ensure that the result for your work will be recorded correctly. It is the responsibility of all students to know what they are enrolled in; you can check your enrolment via the My Monash Portal.

Anecdotally, you may hear other students talk about receiving a fail grade because their submitted assignment went missing. This is actually very rare and only happens when the above process has not been followed. However, if you do have a question about what has happen to your assignment please contact the School Office and we will check our records for you.
Assignment/Essay Collection
Once your assignment/essay has been marked it will be handed back to you in a future tutorial. This provides you with a chance to discuss any feedback.
Occasionally, it might not be possible for you to collect your work in tutorial. All uncollected assignments/essays are kept by the unit coordinator for six months: you can collect your assignment from the unit coordinator. For Berwick and Caulfield units uncollected assignments can be collected from the Faculty Office. If you are unable to collect your assignment, but wish it to be returned to you please provide a self-addressed envelope.
Due Dates and Late Penalties
Unless you have specifically been given an extension by your tutor, your assignment/essay must be submitted by the due date which is attached to the essay questions. No written work can be accepted by the School after the end of the examination period; this is a strict University regulation. Marks will be deducted for late work: see Penalties for Late Submission.
Extensions
Extensions of time for good reasons may be given by your tutor but must be requested before the relevant deadline. “Pressure of work” is not a good reason: everybody, including your tutor, has pressure of work, and the deadlines for all your essays are given to you in advance so that you can plan your work accordingly.
Generally the maximum extension possible is for two weeks. The School will not accept the fait accompli of an assignment/essay on the original topic submitted more than two weeks after the scheduled deadline. Assignments/essays submitted after that – by special arrangement with your tutor – must be on an alternative topic. If you apply for Special Consideration you can be granted a deferral for the submission of work but this must be applied for in advance: see the Arts Current Students Special Consideration webpage for further information. When you are granted an extension you need to get your tutor to sign the essay cover sheet (or attach any written/emailed proof) so that when you hand in your assignment/essay it is clear that you have received an authorised extension.
Enrolment and Re-enrolment
Course enrolment and re-enrolment follow very set deadlines and procedures and are administered by your home Faculty. Contact your Faculty Office for assistance with enrolment and re-enrolment. All students are notified when it is time to re-enrol.
NB: To enrol in Honours you can not simply re-enrol and add honours units to your undergraduate degree. You need to apply separately. See the Arts Current Students Honours homepage for further information.
Graduate Research students follow a similar set of procedures, but there are variations. PhD candidates enrol and re-enrol via the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS); Masters students enrol/re-enrol via the Arts Research Graduate School (ARGS).
Unit enrolment is part of the larger course enrolment and re-enrolment processes. Normally you add or drop units according to the standard procedures for your course/faculty (e.g. via WES). Sometimes, to enrol in a unit you will need written permission from the unit coordinator (i.e. you may not meet a prerequisite or you may be late in adding the unit). You will need this written permission to be attached to an Enrolment Amendment Form which you then submit to your Faculty Office. Enrolment Amendment Forms are available from your Faculty Office; if you need to contact a unit coordinator contact the ECPS School Office.
Unit Readers and Unit Guides
Unit Readers and Unit Guides are the essential reference manuals for your unit.
Unit Guides provide the assessment details, reading lists, unit coordinator contact details, unit synopsis, objectives etc. Unit Guides are distributed in your first lectures/tutorials. If you miss out you can collect a copy from your unit coordinator or from the School Office on your home campus.
Unit Readers are larger providing the same information as Unit Guides, but also a variety of source material that you will be expected to refer to in your unit: for this reason there is a cost involved. Unit Readers are available from the Bookshop on your home campus. A copy of each Unit Reader is available from the Reference section of the Library on your home campus.
You are expected to collect/purchase your Unit Guide or Unit Reader prior to the start of semester. If you are unsure whether there is a Unit Reader or Unit Guide associated with your unit contact the School Office.
