Postgraduate Courses
The Communications and Media Studies (C&MS) Program offers excellent supervision and research expertise for both Masters by Research and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students. Both of these qualifications provide students with a wide range of research and analytical skills in the fields of communication and media studies. The program aims to provide a critical understanding of the problems and issues encountered by individuals, organisations and communities in a globalised world dominated by media, communication and information flows, and offer the means to both understand and respond to these issues.
C&MS is a distinctive program, focussing on a broad range of subjects related to socio-cultural communication and media, and medium theory and practice. All staff are research active in both national and international academic forums, publishing articles and books, as well as delivering conference and seminar papers. This high-level of research activity means postgraduate students are trained and encouraged to present their research in seminars, conferences and through publishing opportunities. Currently enrolled students are completing research projects investigating online communities, surveillance and terrorism, news media reception, and the use of information and communication technologies by local governments.
Supervision is available in a wide array of subject areas including, but not exclusive to:
- Audience and reception studies.
- Communication and social theory.
- Computer and video game studies.
- Gender and media studies.
- Global cultural production, and cross-cultural translation and appropriation.
- Media and cultural policy.
- New media and digital culture.
- Philosophy of communication and media.
- Political economy of the media industries.
- Politics and media.
- Publishing studies.
- Sports media.
- Technology, the body and media.
- War, conflict and representation.
This wide range of subjects offers the opportunity for students to use diverse theoretical frameworks and methodologies. Graduating students may then choose to work in the media industries, or pursue professional academic employment in Australia and overseas.
