We have a long established reputation for excellence in teaching and for the cutting edge contribution of our research units. Many of our academics are world-renowned experts with impressive profiles and publication histories. They work at the edge of contemporary thinking – applied to emerging social, cultural and creative trends – duly grounded within classic theoretical frameworks and modes of practice.
Our scholars participate in local, national and international academic activities, and play host to a robust annual calendar of conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops. They provide expert commentary – across both traditional and emerging media – on matters as diverse as the rise of blogs and the future of the book, the role of cinematic conventions, the practice of art criticism and the importance of visual culture.

Teaching and research environment
Students and researchers in our school consistently refer to our friendly, intellectually stimulating and supportive environment.
We understand that a strong community is crucial to academic achievement. We know that the university experience is greatly enriched by the existence of a lively, communal atmosphere. And that career success can be significantly aided by good social networks, as well as by industry and international linkages. We go out of our way to make these connections happen for all our students and researchers.
Each year, we organise a wide variety of academic conferences and symposia, seminars and panel discussions, workshops and moderated debates.
We host frequent visits from major scholars and creative practitioners, both national and international. We also support activities such live theatre and dance performances, concerts, film screenings, and media events and installations. Informal lunchtime forums, regular guest speakers from industry and academe, creative teaching techniques and creative team work compliment the School’s strong heritage of traditional academic methods.
We teach and research at both Monash University’s Clayton and Caulfield campuses. The Clayton Menzies Building refurbishment will deliver state-of-the-art facilities to the School.
Monash University has a theatre, gallery, rehearsal spaces and cinema, as well as a large number of virtual spaces, which are all put to good use by our students.

In the School of English, Communications and Performance Studies, students learn:
