The School of ECPS offers a wide range of undergraduate units in Communications and Media Studies, Drama and Theatre Studies, English (including Creative Writing and Professional Writing), Film and Television Studies, Performance Studies and Visual Culture. The majority of our units are available to students in any undergraduate course provided that you meet unit and course requirements (PER units are only available to BPA students). Unit requirements are listed in the online handbook; course requirements can be checked with your home faculty. As an undergraduate you can study units from one or more of the School’s disciplines for credit towards your course (e.g. Bachelor of Arts). You will find most information you need to manage your course and unit enrolment on your home faculty’s website; including course requirements, policies and procedures, and links to important university webpages. For Arts students this is the Arts Current Students website; other commonly requested links are in the highlight boxes to the right of this page.
When you enrol in a unit you need to become familiar with the area that teaches the unit as well as with your course/faculty administration. In ECPS student administrative support has been standardised so that all disciplines follow the same processes and procedures: see “ECPS Student Services” for more detail. This allows the discipline sections to concentrate on academic content: you will find additional resources and support under the discipline section that is responsible for your unit.
Orientation and Transition
When you begin a course at Monash you undergo a transition period which begins with Orientation. This is a very important first step as it helps you to understand the environment in which you now find yourself.
- Monash Orientation
- Arts Orientation and Transition
- Monash International Orientation
- Monash Transition Program
A similar process happens when you begin a unit and/or discipline.
As part of O-Week the School runs welcome sessions for each discipline to give you a chance to get to know the teaching staff and ask questions. If you want to know when a session for your discipline is being run, please contact the School Office.
Unit Readers and Unit Guides include information about assessment, timelines, study aids, etc. If you are unclear about something after reading this information the School student services staff can answer administrative queries and teaching staff can help with academic issues. For more information about Unit Readers and Unit Guides see [ECPS Student Services - Administrative Information](http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/ecps/admin/admininfo.php).
Transition is built into each unit and you will find that teaching staff will spend time in the first couple of weeks of your unit making sure you are aware of what you are going to cover in the unit, what is expected, where you can go for help, etc.
Remember! If you are having difficulty understanding anything during your transition period or at any time during the semester it is best to talk to someone as early as possible.
ECPS Disciplines (Areas of Study)
You can find information about each discipline under the relevant ECPS Section or Centre: Communications and Media Studies, Drama and Theatre Studies, English, Film and Television Studies, and Visual Culture.
ECPS offers individual units, major and minor sequences in each discipline (NB: Performance Studies is only available to BPA). For information on majors and minors and how to build a sequence in a specific discipline see the Arts Current Students Area of Study website.
ECPS Student Services
The ECPS Student Services Team is your first port of call for all school administration matters. If you need assistance with a process, class-listing, staff availability or access to School student resources please contact ECPS Student Services. You can find information on student administration, (e.g. how to lodge your essay, how to add a unit), school policies and student resources at the ECPS Student Services website.
