Lecture: Jihadism in Europe
Presented by Professor Farhad Khosrokhavar, international expert on Islamic radicalism
Professor Farhad Khosrokhavar, an expert in the fields of Islam, violent radicalisation, as well as of Iranian society after the Islamic revolution, and internationally-acclaimed author of Suicide Bombers: the New Martyrs of Allah and Muslims in Prison: a comparative perspective between Great Britain and France, will visit Australia in August to present a series of public lectures about Jihadism in Europe and the Middle East.

Securing Sustainable Energy Supplies in Europe and Australia: Policy-Makers, Business, Scientists, NGOs on Energy and the Environmental Challenge
The purpose of this interdisciplinary conference is to provide a forum for academics, policy-makers, business representatives and environmental groups to explore, debate and compare the different approaches and experiences in securing energy supplies in Europe and Australia, with a view to facilitating the development of sustainable government and business strategy in both jurisdictions. In particular, the conference will focus on the interplay between policy-makers, scientists, business and environmental groups in securing sustainable energy supplies in the European Union and Australia.

EUROPE TRAVEL GRANTS -- closing date 15 August
Applications are now open for Monash PhD students and staff to apply for a 2008 Europe Travel Grant.
This scheme, through the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International), aims to assist Monash early career researchers and foster university links with centres of research and educational excellence in Europe.
Up to twelve Europe Travel Grants to the maximum value of $A8,000 will be available to support the cost of travel and accommodation associated with a period of research or a conference for Monash PhDs or early career researchers.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY COURSEWORK MASTER
New programme in 2008
This new programme aims to provide professionals or future professionals with a deep understanding of the institutional framework and policy-making processes of the EU and its relations with non-EU countries, regions and international organizations.
The course draws on a variety of disciplines: management, law, politics, sociology and history and investigates the political, legal, economic, social, humanitarian, environmental and security implications for the international system.

WHAT IS THE MONASH EUROPEAN AND EU CENTRE?
The multidisciplinary Monash European and EU Centre, hosted by the Faculty of Arts and incorporating the Faculties of Law and Business & Economics was jointly established in June 2006 with funding from the European Union and Monash University.
Professor Pascaline Winand, formerly Professor of Contemporary History at the European University Institute, Fiesole Italy, commenced in the position of Director of the Centre in January 2007. Highly regarded in Europe and the US for her expertise on the European Union's external relations and the history of European integration and transatlantic relations, Professor Winand's current research projects concern transnational elites, the EU as international actor on the world scene, and EU-US-NATO relations. Key strengths of the Centre are the research expertise of its members and its multidisciplinary Master in European and International Studies which offers students the opportunity of studying in Europe and provides a portal to facilitate European and EU related activities across Monash University.
