Special Purpose Courses

French for business

The French Studies program has been teaching courses in Business French within the undergraduate program and on an in-company basis for the last 12 years.

Any company with, or planning to develop, business links with French-speaking countries should consider what level of French language expertise its employees need. In some cases this may be as little as a switchboard operator or receptionist who can welcome callers and visitors in French and direct them to the right person. In other cases a wholly- or partly-owned French subsidiary or a company dealing extensively with France may need different levels of language expertise throughout the company, from the CEO, or their secretary, needing to talk to or e-mail French colleagues on a daily basis, to the Finance or Human Resources Manager needing to translate or summarise documents received from France, to "front of house" staff meeting and greeting clients. Even when French is not the main operational language or language of negotiation it is always useful to have at least one person who understands what is going on. And the public or client relations value of being able to communicate, make arrangements, deal with problems, etc, in French can never be overestimated.

Staff from the French Studies program are happy to discuss and assess the French language needs of companies and individuals and to prepare tailor-made programs to suit specific circumstances and meet specific needs.
