Biography

I was an undergraduate at Cambridge and did postgraduate work at Oxford. Before coming to Monash in 1986 I taught at the University of Wales (Aberystwyth) and, for one year, at the Ecole Normale Superieure, rue d'Ulm, Paris. I was Professor of French Studies at Monash from 1986 until 2008, when I took early retirement in order to concentrate on research and translation work. In 2011 I was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

Research interests

My research interests lie in the fields of 19th- and 20th-century French literature and culture, and translation studies (I am President of the Australian Association for Literary Translation: http://home.vicnet.net.au/~aalitra/). I have published extensively on the novels of Emile Zola, including Zola and the Bourgeoisie (1983) and The Cambridge Companion to Emile Zola (2007). I have translated and edited Zola's The Ladies' Paradise, Pot Luck, The Kill, The Belly of Paris and The Fortune of the Rougons for Oxford University Press. I have edited or co-edited twelve books on aspects of modern French and European culture. I am currently engaged on a book-length introduction to French literature.

Editorial functions

I am editor of the Australian Journal of French Studies (which is based at Monash). I co-founded the UK-based journal Romance Studies.
