Professor Brian Nelson

Biography
I was an undergraduate at Cambridge and did postgraduate work at Oxford. Before coming to Monash I taught at the University of Wales (Aberystwyth) and, for one year, at the ‰cole Normale Suprieure, rue d'Ulm, Paris.
Teaching responsibilities
I teach and contribute to courses in modern French literature and cultural studies (Paris, The Female Body), and translation studies.

Research interests
My research interests lie in the fields of 19th- and 20th-century French literature and culture, and translation studies. My publications include books on Zola, Camus, Intellectuals in Contemporary France, The Idea of Europe and Naturalism in the European Novel. I have translated and edited Zola's The Ladies' Paradise, Pot Luck and The Kill for Oxford University Press (Oxford World's Classics). I am currently preparing The Cambridge Companion to Emile Zola and books on dandies/dandyism and Zola's Nana.
Editorial functions
I am editor of the Australian Journal of French Studies (which is based at Monash). I co-founded the UK-based journal Romance Studies . I founded and edit the monograph series Monash Romance Studies.
