French Studies at Year Level 1
First year French Studies has FOUR ENTRY POINTS, allowing any student, from the beginner to the fluent speaker, to study French language, culture and society. Enrolling students select ONE of FOUR FIRST YEAR SEQUENCES according to their proficiency level. The starting point for beginners is obvious. For students who have already studied French, proficiency level is determined by a short diagnostic test undertaken before the start of semester one. Students should enrol in the language level they think is right for them and they will then be contacted regarding the diagnostic test.
It should be noted that this information applies to students enrolling through the usual process at the beginning of the university year for semesters 1 and 2. Some students may enrol through mid-year entry, beginning study in semester 2. These students cannot undertake FRN1010 at that point. They may seek placement in other second-semester units. They should seek advice on the configuration of their first-year, minor and major sequences from the convenor of the program.
An approximate guide to levels is given below:
Students
who have studied little or no French would normally enrol in
FRN1010
French Studies 1 and FRN1020

Prohibition:
Students who have completed Year 11 French or
its equivalent may NOT enrol in this sequence.
Students who have completed Year 10 French and achieved a high result and / or spent time in a French-speaking country as an exchange student or to study French should also sit the diagnostic test to see if they can study at the next language proficiency level of French Studies.
Students from Faculties other than Arts who are taking French Studies as a second year elective should note that they may instead enrol in FRN2010 and FRN2020 .
