Major in French Studies - Year Level 3
Students should note that TWO majors in French Studies exist:
- the Major in French Studies (Advanced) in which the outcome level achieved by students is level 10 or equivalent.
- the Major in French Studies (Standard) in which the outcome is levels 6-9 or equivalent.
The content of the Major in French Studies depends on the first year entry point, but the structure always constitutes 48 points of study over 3 year levels (12 points in first year, 12 points in second year, 24 points in third year OR 12 points in first year 18 points in second year, 18 points in third year) out of a total of 144 points for the BA and 96 points for the BA in combined degrees.
Students who undertake French Studies from entry points French Studies 1 - 6 normally complete 36 points of core units over three years = six 6-point units) and 12 points (two 6-point units) of option units. Students who undertake French Studies from entry point French Studies 7 normally complete 24 points of core units and 24 points (four 6-point units) of option units.
That content can be varied where students:
- replace core units with French Studies Abroad units;
- jump levels in view of their excellent achievement (no longer taking sequential levels, but moving to a level beyond the one into which they would normally move from one semester or year to the next);
- do both of the above, studying abroad and achieving a level of language competence that allows them, on return, to jump levels in the normal sequence pattern:
- who began their French Studies at language level 1 and request to do further core units instead of options (this is not available to students starting above language level 1). Students must obtain the prior written approval of the program's convenor.
All students are encouraged to do more than the minimum number of units/points since this will increase their linguistic proficiency and broaden their knowledge of French culture. Intending Honours students should note that they are required to have completed 48 points, and are strongly advised to complete at least two option units.
