Honours Entry Requirements

Current (or recent) Monash student

(Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Letters, Bachelor of Communication, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Performing Arts, Bachelor of Social and Community Welfare)

Monash students who are enrolled in or who have been enrolled in the general BA or one of the specialised BA degrees or BA equivalents on any campus (except Berwick) qualify for admission to fourth year Honours provided that:

  1. they have completed the normal requirements for that degree;

  2. they have completed a major sequence (48 points or more over three years) within their chosen discipline(s) or interdisciplinary program. Students applying for Honours in interdisciplinary areas (such as Women's Studies and Gender Research, Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, etc) may qualify for entry if they have completed an approved major in an area cognate with that for which they are applying, and if they have satisfied the other normal entry requirements;

  3. they have obtained average grades of 70 per cent or better in units in the Honours discipline(s), to the value of 24 points at second and third year levels, 18 points of which must be at third year level.

Students qualified to enter an Honours program must normally do so within five years of the date on which they completed their undergraduate studies.

Double degree students

Double degree students must have completed the above requirements for at least one degree.

Berwick Students

Berwick students may be admitted to Honours provided that:

  1. they have completed the normal requirements of the degree for which they are enrolled;
  2. they have completed 48 points or more of study in the relevant Arts discipline, comprising a 36 point Berwick Arts sequence plus an additional 12 points in that discipline, at second or third year;
  3. they have obtained average grades of 70 per cent or better in units in the Honours discipline, to the value of 24 points at second and third year levels, 16 points (18 points for those students commencing the BA in 2000 or after) of which must be at third year level.

Bachelor of Communication students

All students

If you are a currently enrolled Bachelor of Communication student, or you have been enrolled in a BA with a Communication and Media Studies major at any Monash campus, you qualify for admission provided:

  • You have completed the normal requirements for that degree;
  • You have completed a major sequence (48 points or more over three years) within the Communication and Media studies program;
  • You have obtained average grades of 70% or better in the honours discipline to the value of 24 points at second and third year levels, 18 points of which must be at third year level.

External students

External students are considered to be:

  1. Current or completed Monash students from Faculties other than Arts.

    These students in these two categories may be admitted to BA (Honours) candidature with credit for a full three years of undergraduate work, provided that:

    1. they have completed the normal requirements for the degree for which they are enrolled;
    2. they have completed within the Faculty of Arts the second and third year levels of a major sequence (a minimum of 36 points or the equivalent) within their intended discipline or interdisciplinary program;
    3. they have obtained average distinction grades of 70 per cent or better equivalent to 24 points at second and third year levels, 18 points of which must be at third year level.

    or

  2. Students who have completed a three year degree at a higher education institution other than Monash University.

    These students must provide a certified copy of their academic transcript and supporting documentation regarding content of their course. This course content must be approved by the school as being acceptable for entry.

International students

Currently enrolled Arts international students apply as internal candidates through the Faculty of Arts.

Continuing Arts students seeking to renew their visa, following enrolment and payment of fees, must complete a Confirmation of Course End Date form and lodge it with Monash International. You will then be issued with an eCOE form enabling you to renew your visa with the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA).

International students on a student visa are expected to maintain a full-time enrolment at all times.
