Course Structure

The Bachelor of Arts (Global) is unique in that it provides students with the opportunity to gain a truly international education, and prepares them for the challenges of being a global citizen.

The course reflects the Arts Faculty's commitment to internationalisation by building an international element into the curriculum, both in terms of the subject areas studied and in the opportunities it provides for students to travel and study overseas. It responds to the growing need for graduates who have experience of the world, cultural understanding and self motivation.

Core International Studies major
(48 points of study)

International studies is a cross disciplinary major that explores issues and events that have shaped, and continue to shape, our world. Examples of core units include:

  • INT1010 Contemporary worlds 1
  • INT2015 Production, consumerism and the environment in the contemporary world
  • INT2030 Nationality, ethnicity and conflict
  • INT2040 Globalisation and its discontents

Core Global units
(12 points of study)

There are two core global units. Global studies is a multidisciplinary unit drawing from areas such as sociology, politics, environmental studies and ethics. Global research is designed to prepare students for further studies and refine skills such as independent research and project management.

Arts minor
(24 points of study)

Students can choose from a wide range of disciplines including Anthropology, Behavioural studies, Bioethics, Chinese, Communications, Comparative cultures, Comparative literature, English, English-in-use, European studies, French, Geography, German, Hebrew, Hispanic studies, History, History-Politics, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Linguistics, Philosophy, Politics, Religion and Theology, Russian studies, Slavic studies, Sociology, Spanish, Visual culture, or Women's studies. (Not all disciplines are available at every campus)

Another arts first year sequence
(12 points of study)

Students can choose from all of the above disciplines except the languages.

Electives chosen from arts or another faculty
(48 points of study)

Students can choose electives from a single area of study to create a second major, or can use this elective component to explore a range of studies.

Overseas Study and Distributed Learning

A special feature of this degree is that students must study overseas for at least one semester, but may do so for up to three semesters.

They can study at Monash Malaysia, Monash South Africa, or another approved Monash partner university anywhere in the world. Overseas studies can not be commenced until second year of the course, giving students the opportunity to investigate their options and preferred destinations.

Students who find they are unable to study abroad as originally intended will be able to continue their studies under the normal Bachelor of Arts course structure.

Up to two semesters may also be studied by distributed learning, for example by studying via distance education or online.

Who should apply?

  • Students with an interest in international issues, global politics, language or culture; or
  • Students with a desire to study extensively overseas; or
  • Self motivated, independent learners interested in completing some studies off campus by flexible learning; or
  • Students planning to work in a multinational environment.

Possible career outcomes

Completing the BA (Global) will provide students with a competitive edge in the job market as they will be able to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability as well as having knowledge of current issues from an international perspective.

Graduates may find employment in international relations or trade, foreign affairs, diplomacy, politics and government, environmental research or planning, or international development.
