Undergraduate areas and subjects

What's on offer
As one of the largest Arts faculties in Australia, Monash Arts offers you an exciting selection of subjects from over fifty areas of study each year.
Sometimes referred to as disciplines, areas of study are broad topic areas like History or Politics. Units are like subjects and they make up the different areas of study.
To the right you can select from the full range of areas offered by the Faculty of Arts or browse by category here:
English, communications, journalism and writing
History, archaeology and anthropology
Languages, cultures and linguistics
Music, performance and theatre
Philosophy, bioethics and theology
Psychology, politics, international studies and social sciences
Who can study our units?
Our subjects are available to study:
- in a Monash Arts degree;
- as electives in another Monash degree;
- individually, as single subject or cross institutional study; or
- as part of Study Abroad or Exchange
What do you study in an Arts degree?
In an Arts degree you complete the compulsory Arts requirement - your major, minor and other Arts subjects - from these areas of study. Make sure you read the course structure information for the degrees you are interested in. Single specialist degrees may require you to study specific areas or complete certain subjects. Check our course information for links or see the University Handbook.
Areas offered by other faculties
A special feature of most single degree is that you can study units from another faculty such as business or science. Explore the information in the University Handbook for details of areas of study and units offered by other faculties.
Remember the elective component is not included in the Arts degree when taken as a double degree.
Take Arts as an elective in your degree
Our subjects are available to students to study as electives in a degree from another Monash faculty. Check the course requirements in the University Handbook for the degree you are interested in. This will tell you how many points may be taken from another faculty.
You need 48 points of electives to major in Arts. An Arts minor requires 24 points.
Undergraduate diplomas
If your course does not allow you to take electives, or if you don't have enough electives in your degree to complete a major in a Monash Arts area of study, then you can also consider the possibility of enrolling in an undergraduate diploma alongside your degree. Unfortunately as subjects are taken over three years undergraduate diplomas are not available to international student visa holders.
