Geography and environmental science emphasises an understanding of the relationship between people and the natural environment by drawing on different areas of the sciences and social sciences. Sustainability , Environment and Society Sustainable development is a critical issue requiring innovative interdisciplinary thinking on a broad range of social, economic and environmental matters. This area of study includes issues such as:
- Are our current lifestyles sustainable and how can they be made so in the future?
- What role do we play in environmental change, and what challenges are posed by it?
- How can we respond?
The program has four main streams:
Physical geography which focuses on the components of climate, water, landforms, biota and soils that make up the natural environment.
Environmental science which critically investigates the relationship of people with nature, in particular focussing on environmental management in theory, policy and practice.
Human geography which investigates processes such as urbanisation, globalisation, cultural differentiation and international development with a view towards social justice.
Indigenous archaeology which critically analyses the evolution and movement of humans, specialising in the archaeology of Aboriginal Australia and Torres Strait.
Each of these areas is supported by teaching in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which integrates geographical, spatial and demographic information. GIS can store, analyse, retrieve and manipulate information for the purpose of environmental management and decision making. There are many opportunities for practical, hands-on experience through field studies within Australia and overseas.
