Asian studies

Asian studies explores issues from a comparative perspective across a range of Asian countries, by comparing culture (including music and literature), history, politics and societies. Asia's relations with Australia and the rest of the world are studied, with the option of taking a closer look at particular countries such as China, Japan, Korea or regions such as Southeast Asia.

Chinese and Chinese studies

Chinese studies focuses on Chinese culture and society and is open to nonlanguage students. It includes units in Asian studies. Examples of areas covered include Asian civilisations, Chinese literature and modernity, contemporary China, Chinese nationalism, politics, economics and music. Chinese language is available from beginners to advanced levels. The Chinese program at Monash is one of the largest in Australia with a highly successful in-country program providing opportunities to study in China.

Chinese translation

Studies in Chinese translation provide a solid foundation in basic Chinese translation and interpreting skills. Students will develop a good understanding of basic concepts of translation and interpreting and professional language skills in both written and verbal forms through translation and an awareness of cultural sensitivity. Students develop the knowledge necessary for communicating in Chinese and English in professional contexts. They will be in a strong position to pursue further studies that will lead to a professional qualification in translation and/or interpreting.

Classical studies offers students a vibrant and accessible introduction to the life, culture and language of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. Drawing links between the ancient world and modern society, the program combines the best of classical learning and contemporary scholarship. Language courses are available in Latin or Ancient Greek from beginners level.

This area is suited to international and local students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. French language and studies

This program allows students to develop a high level of communication skills in French language (including translation and specialised areas such as business French), and critical awareness in French studies (including areas such as literature, film, cultural studies and politics). Students can study language at a level that suits their proficiency from beginners to advanced. All students are encouraged to participate in the Language Study Abroad program in France or the Francophile world, for a semester of study.

German language and studies

The German studies program comprises three different components: language, culture and linguistics. The language component covers writing, reading and speaking German. There are ten different entry levels from absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of German to advanced levels. The culture component introduces students to German literature, history, philosophy, politics and society. In linguistics, students will study the nature and use of language, the way it changes and the role it plays in society.

Indonesian language and studies

The study of Indonesian at Monash offers the opportunity for students to explore and experience the diverse nature of Indonesian language and culture while developing skills and knowledge which are very much in demand in today's economic climate. Monash has a long history of teaching Indonesian culture and language and we strive to provide innovative, challenging and enjoyable cultural experiences in our classes. The program is highly flexible with classes offered in off-campus mode, in-country (Yogyakarta) and at Clayton. Our Indonesian library collection is recognised as one of the best in the region.

Islamic studies

The program is dedicated to rigorously pursue objective academic research on Islam and contemporary issues of concern specifically to Australia and Asia-pacific and Muslims' engagement with other civilizations and intercultural dialogue. The program will offer information through elective units to interested parties, such as professionals who work in immigration, law, and educational institutions, organisations with Muslim employees, community organisations, researchers, journalists, religious leaders, social workers and anyone who has some responsibility or interest in understanding the Muslim faith in general and Muslims in Australia in particular.

Italian language and studies

Italian studies aims to develop linguistic competence in understanding, reading, speaking and writing. It also helps students to expand their knowledge of important areas of Italian culture: history, society, language, literature, film and theatre. There are four entry points from beginners to advanced level and in second and third year, students are encouraged to study at the Monash University Prato Centre in Italy as part of a study abroad experience.

Japanese language and studies

First year units provide a broad introduction to aspects of Japanese culture and society and the broader Asian context. Higher-level units focus on popular culture, media, Japan in the Asia Pacific, and interpreting and translation. There are six possible entry levels for the language component ranging from beginners to advanced and students are placed in classes matching their ability. There are extensive opportunities for students to study in Japan and Monash now has affiliations with 11 Japanese institutions.

Korean language and studies

The Korean studies program is designed for students who want to develop language skills and understand Korean culture and society. The program is useful to students who aspire to a professional career in business or government, communication, education and other fields. Korean language is offered from beginners to advanced levels. Socio-cultural aspects of language use are explored and students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities to study abroad.

Linguistics

Linguistics is the study of the structure and function of language and the uses of language in communication including written, spoken and 'cyber' contexts. Areas explored include how it is that we have become the talking animals, what people do with language (eg using slang and jargon), the different varieties of forms and uses of language, how language develops over time and some of the myths that exist, for example do women talk more than men?

Modern Greek

Modern Greek is spoken by about 11 million people in Greece and Cyprus, and in various Greek communities of the diaspora. It is an Indo-European language, but unlike French or German it has no close relatives among modern European languages. Beginners will find that a good many Modern Greek words and roots are already familiar to them from our scientific and technical vocabulary. Units offered focus on the culture and literature of the Greeks over the past 200 years and introduce students to the enticing rhythm of life in modern Greece, the definitive crossroads between west and east, Europe and Asia.

Spanish and Latin American language and studies

Culture and language are the two key components of this program. The cultural component covers Spanish and Latin American history, culture and society. The language component aims to develop a high level of competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing and is taught from beginners to advanced levels with three points of entry. Elective units are also offered in Latin-American culture and include studies in literature, cultural theory and film.

Ukrainian language and studies

Ukrainian language and culture includes a Ukrainian studies stream for beginners as well as an advanced stream for students with previous knowledge. Students who take Ukrainian studies develop their skills in the written and spoken language and are introduced to modern Ukrainian literature, history and culture as well as everyday life in Ukraine today.
