About our double degree

Dan Sheehan: Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music

Broaden your options

A double degree means studying two degrees simultaneously, usually from different faculties. With over 35 double degrees, Monash Arts has one of the largest selections in Australia.

About 20% of all Monash undergraduate students choose to study a double degree each year.

Most double degrees with Arts are completed in four years if studying full time. Given a single degree takes three years, qualifying with two degrees in four years instead of six is an attractive option to many students.

Arts degrees can be taken with degrees from law, business, science, social work, information technology, visual arts, music, education or engineering. There are even double degrees that are offered at other institutions. Links to course information are provided to the right.

Why study a double degree?

A key benefit of studying a double degree is that it can increase your employment options because it broadens your knowledge and skills in different areas. For example, if you have an Arts/Science double degree you could pursue a career in arts or science or fields where these intersect such as scientific journalism.

Arts degrees can be taken with degrees from law, business, science, social work, information technology, visual arts, music, education or engineering.

How double degrees work

Where students in a single degree have the option of taking elective units from other faculties, students in double degrees will have units from each course counted as elective units towards the other course. This cross counting allows double degree students to meet the requirements of both degrees in less time (usually 1 -2 years less) than it takes to do them separately.

In most double degrees the total number of credit points to be earned is 192, which is 48 points per year. The total number of subjects (units) to be completed is 32, which is 8 per year, if studying full time. Part time students have up to 10 years to complete double degree requirements.

Make sure you read the course information for the double degrees you like. Some double degrees, such as those with engineering and law, take over five years to complete and include additional credit points. Course information is provided to the right and further down this page.

Compulsory Arts requirement

It is compulsory to structure your degree with major, minor, first year sequence and 2 additional subjects from the areas of study offered by Monash Arts.

Major: 8 units (48 points) taken over 3 years. This is the area of study you choose to specialise in.

Minor: 4 units (24 points) taken from an area of study that is different from your major.

Sequence: 2 units (12 points) taken in first year. This is taken in an area of study that is different to your minor and major.

Additional arts units: 2 units (12 points) in any area(s) of study.

Non-arts component

The non-arts component of the double degree varies between faculties and courses, but typically involves a combination of compulsory units and a specialisation (major).

Managing Faculty information

You will have contact with both faculties while studying a double degree. However, for administrative purposes each double degree is managed by a particular faculty. This information is included with our course information below.

DAN SHEEHAN

Dan's most memorable experience so far? The three-week Prato course was so intense we found ourselves with enough material and ideas to occupy the next two or three years of study and practice, but the enormity of the experience itself will be a source of inspiration and self-motivation for many years to come.
