Course | Bachelor of Arts Honours

About Julia

Julia Smith completed a major in Human Geography and Politics, followed by an Honours year in International Development and Sustainability.

After receiving numerous local and international job offers, she decided to start her career in sustainable transport in Melbourne. She also started an NGO called Help Educate Children with a number of colleagues, and took some time off to be part of the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development program doing community and project development work in the Philippines. Julia attributes the passion of her lecturers and field studies throughout Africa and Asia as key influencers in shaping her academic interests and career path. Although initially wary about the "abstract" nature of an Arts degree, she says, "Now that I am working I realise how many valuable skills Arts graduates develop in researching, writing, communication, presentation and time management. We also tend to have a certain level of creative and independent thinking which employers seek."

Julia is now seeking to undertake postgraduate studies in environmental management, leadership and non-profit management in Boston, US in order to pursue her interest in sustainable,
effective and empowering community development.
