Research Interests
Christiane Weller's main research interest of recent years has focussed on the question of the construction of identity, the strategies employed by asserting and delimitating self identity against the other and the impasses and possibilities of dialogue between the two agencies. Weller's theoretical approach has been predominantly informed by a psychoanalytic framework, which has been applied to a variety of topics, ranging from the analysis of German colonial literature in her Masters thesis (Der genealogische Diskurs in Hans Grimms' Volk ohne Raum' - Zu einem Paradigma der Kolonialliteratur, 1989, Ludwig-Maximilians Universitt Munich), over the examination of German travel literature from the 18th to the 20th century in her PhD thesis (title, see above), to more recent ventures into the field of German literature after unification and to the partaking in the closely related multi-disciplinary research project entitled "The construction of cultural identity", which had been supported by the Research Strength Support Scheme (2001/2002) of the Arts Faculty of Monash. Weller's participation in the proposed project will provide her with the opportunity to calibrate a theoretical/academically-oriented interest against a more clinically based understanding in psychoanalysis.
