Cultural Geography

 Cultural Geography

Culture is a key determinant of how we live our lives. Understanding who the winners and losers are in society and why have always been key foci of human geography. Cultural geography has re-emerged into the discipline in recent years asking similar questions but in new, innovative and exciting ways.

Cultural geography aims to unravel the role that culture plays in the construction space, place and identity. It examines the importance of culture, including everyday beliefs and practices, in understanding contemporary urban processes and explores the growing claims for social justice amongst a range of groups within urban settings.

This sub-discipline of geography focuses on difference and diversity at a range of scales: local, national and global. It also considers how a range of urban struggles are in fact struggles over culture and cultural dominance. Struggles over culture shape our everyday lives, social meanings, distribution of power, justice and social and economic disadvantage.
