About the School of Geography and Environmental Science
Our work is conducted in locations that encompass an array of cultures, societies and environments in both hemispheres, but with a particular focus on Australia and the Indo-Pacific region. Through the geographical spread of our work, we encourage the view that individual and collective responsibility for the environment can be expressed through an informed engagement with local, regional and global issues. SGES has developed its reputation as one of the best research schools of its kind in Australia in the disciplinary areas of environment and society (natural resource management, water management and policy, political ecology), physical geography (climatology, geomorphology, palynology), applied Geographic Information Science (GIS), urban economic and regional development (housing, labour, urban planning, socio-cultural diversity), and indigenous archaeology. It is a place where academic and research staff members are engaged in innovative, high quality, and socially relevant research pertaining to Australia and several other regions of the world.
