Postgraduate degrees provide students with more than specialisation in their field, expertise in the methodologies employed and a comprehensive knowledge of their discipline. Graduates establish and develop transferable skills valued by a broad range of employers. These include experience in designing research agendas, writing progress and evaluation reports, preparing funding submissions, liaison with official institutions and community groups, official meeting procedures, time management and general administration. Specific projects will add to this list depending on the methods chosen and any related short-term employment taken up during the course of the degree.

A key strength of the Programme for Australian Indigenous Archaeology is its active postgraduate studies programme. Dr Ian McNiven and Dr Bruno David provide a broad range of empirical and theoretical expertise to assist postgraduate students undertake cutting edge research in Australian Indigenous Archaeology. Potential students can either join with existing research projects of the Programme (e.g. Torres Strait) or choose other topics of interest. Opportunities exist for co-supervision with staff from the School of Geography & Environmental Science and the Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies.
