The Program will consist of units on World Prehistory, Human Evolution and Environment, Human Ecology, the Archaeology of Indigenous Australia, Archaeological Theories and Controversies, and Archaeological Field and Lab Methods. Students are also encouraged to enroll in other relevant units in Quaternary Studies, Indigenous Studies and Social Theory, and Geographical Information Systems run by GES and other departments at the Monash University Clayton Campus. In particular, the Program has strong links with the Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies ( CAIS ) and with the program for Meditteranean archaeology at the Centre for Archaeology and Ancient History. Our aim is to offer students a broad background in Australian indigenous archaeology at an undergraduate level. Advanced studies can be pursued at 4th year Honours level, and at postgraduate levels through a Masters and a PhD (both by Research).
The Program begins undergraduate teaching in Semester 1 of 2004 with World Prehistory (1st year unit) and the Archaeology of Indigenous Australia, Quaternary Ecology and Human Evolution and Environment (2nd/3rd year units). In 2005 to 2006 the addition of 2nd/3rd year units on Archaeological Theories and Controversies, and Archaeological Field and Lab Methods.
