Geography and Environmental Science
Dr. Jason Beringer has established a SuomiNet meteorological and GPS base station in association with the University Corporation for
Atmospheric Research (UCAR) USA, and the Victorian Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Land Information Group.
Grants from DNRE, Monash Faculty of Arts, and the UCAR have enabled the project to move to completion.
The base station, positioned on the roof of the Menzies building, will collect and transmit meteorological and geodetic data for use in research and commercial applications world wide.
Monash Minor Works Supervisor Ron Lamb arranged the installation of the antenna and Alan McDonald and Gary Peake installed it under the watchful eye of Dr. Beringer.

Dr. Rebekah Brown talks to the ABC about Water Usage
Following her keynote addresses at the international 'Cities as Catchments' conference in Adelaide, Rebekah Brown spoke to the ABC about Water Management and usage. Their story as follows:
Academic urges cooperation for water management
Conflict between administrative bodies is being blamed for stalling any meaningful changes in the way Australians use their water resources.
Today Monash University geography lecturer, Dr Rebekah Brown, addresses the international 'Cities as Catchments' conference in Adelaide and says communities, scientists and industry leaders all want to change the way water is used.
She says all levels of government need to work more closely to achieve that.
"We have local government looking after storm water primarily, but at state government level we have water authorities dealing with water supply and dealing with waste water," she said.
"If we're wanting to advance sustainable water futures, we'd actually have to look at storm water supplementing the water system."
PhD Scholarships - Climate (2005-2007)
PhD Scholarship "Top-ups" (2) 2005-2007 School of Geography & Environmental Science Impacts of and Adaptations to Climate Extremes
Never before have we faced such a complex, uncertain and potentially dangerous challenge to Australian society as climate change. Mitigation and adaptation to climate change require the continuing enhancement and effective communication of scientific understanding of complex interactions between the Earth's atmosphere, ocean, biosphere and human activities. They also require a social and economic understanding of the consequences of climate change and of the insight needed to formulate effective policy responses.
The aim of these joint Monash/CSIRO postgraduate research projects is to undertake research to better understand the complex relationships between climate and society. Currently, there is a large gap in understanding that exists between the understanding of the weather and climate system on the one hand, and practical outcomes for policy and governance on the other. Topic areas could range from the mechanisms responsible for and the impacts of severe weather to the interactions between agriculture, drought and bushfire, to the development of risk assessment methods suitable for use in decision analytic frameworks in order to manage climate change risks on various scales.
Background of candidates: You will be highly motivated with a background in climatology, or meteorology. Knowledge of modelling and some experience in the policy sciences or a related field is an advantage. First class honours or research masters in a relevant field is required.
