CONFERENCE
JOURNEYS OF EXPRESSIONS V CONFERENCE, BELFAST
Kiran Shinde
I attended the "Journeys of Expressions V Conference" in Belfast on 13-15 March 2006. About thirty academics participated from eight countries (representing more than fourteen universities) in the conference to discuss and deliberate on the theme of 'Tourism and the Roots / Routes of Religious Festivity', which proved to be quite relevant for my research. My paper titled "Religious Tourism: Intersection of modern pilgrimages and tourism in India" was well received and appreciated at the conference. I had a great opportunity to exchange my ideas with people working in similar fields and received good feedback on further directions in my research. It gave me good confidence for accomplishing my research and helped me to situate my research within the broader context. The conference also helped me to establish firmly my view points. The paper I presented constitutes the basic arguments and analysis that will become a part of a chapter in my thesis. The conference will be producing an ISBN listed set of proceedings on CD -ROM. I am thankful to the MRGS for providing a partial travel grant and the Monash Tourism Research Unit for providing a top- up grant that covered my travel expenses.
